Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan 17 Martin Luther King, Jr. was a quiet ordinary minister with a wife and children. He came to his profession naturally, since he was a descendent of a family of preachers. He felt led to speak out against social injustices just as his mentor, Mahatmas Gandi, did in India. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a common man who reminded the country of the principles and words of its founding fathers: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” These words were not for a privi- leged or select few. Instead they were and are meant for all of America’s children regardless of skin color. The right to live a long life, however, was not to be for this “Man of Peace.” King died young as a result of his dreams for equality, but his legacy charges us all to make the world a better place in which to live, work and raise our families. Let us all remember on this national holiday honoring Dr. King, as well as throughout this new year, that hate divides whereas, love and tolerance can conquer all. The Neal Senior Center located at 100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC will be open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and all normal activities will take place. Tax Preparation Time The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center through AARP will once again provide free, tax prepration service at the Council on Aging building. Emphasis placed on those with low to middle income levels, and/or 60 years of age or older. You do not have to be a member of AARP. Call to schedule an appointment or walk-ins also welcome. February 3, 2011 - April 15, 2011 - 10:00 am-3:00 pm AARP Tax-Aide offers: (1) Free income tax preparation; (2) Free printing (client copy) and (3) Free e-filing (government copy) for basic U.S. and N.C./S.C. returns. Please bring the following: Blank tax forms, copy of last year forms, W-2 forms, 1099 forms, SSA Forms, charitable donations, last years tax refund, unemployment payments, Est. Only Federal and North Carolina State Simple Forms will be completed. Please review the guidelines prior to calling. In case of Bad Weather – Bad Weather Policy Operating hours are the same for the Senior Center in all weather conditions unless Cleveland County Offices are closed. Opening for participants will be based on county school delays. Shelby Scottish Country Dancers The Shelby Scottish Country Dancers meet on Fridays at the Neal Senior Center located at 100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby. The forerunner of American Square Dancing, Scottish Country Dancing is performed in longwise and square sets. It is the social danc- ing of Scotland and is enjoyed by groups all over the world. Scottish Country Dancing is a great way to get some exercise both physically and mentally while having a great time. This social form of dancing is not the competitive Highland Dancing you might see at a Highland Games such as the Grandfather’s Mountain Highland Games. The cost is $25 per year which helps pay for use of the facility. The teacher, Eilean Yates, an accredited tutor, trained in Scotland and volunteers her time for this class. Her aim is to help others enjoy this fun pastime. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Eilean or Mike Yates at 704-482-8253 to arrange a class visit, so you can see if you’d like to join the class. The group is always looking for some new members. It is not necessary to have a partner to come and join in the fun.
