Clay, Jr. Utilities Operations Center, 824 W. Grover St. to honor those who have given freely of their time and talents over the years to keep Shelby Beautiful. The ceremony included remarks by Mayor Ted Alexander and City Manager, Rick Howell. The official name for the service award is the “Fred Blackley Keep Shelby Beautiful Service Award. He has given freely of his time, talents and expertise on numerous committees, and participation in various community improvement projects. – Skip Warrick – Shelby Nursery, Inc. – has been a dedicated volunteer, who shared his tal- ents, resource and expertise during his appointments to 3 terms on the Keep Shelby Beautiful Commission. Mr. Warrick’s service to the community has helped to improve the visual quality of Shelby and raise awareness of a good community appearance. – Johnny White – Manager of Harvest Works – Mr. White and the Harvest Works crew (composed of individuals with developmental disabilities) have helped Shelby’s citizens over the years by developing community gardens, growing food to feed the hungry, and in 2009 helped the Keep Shelby Beautiful Commission with the Gold Street Tree Replacement Project. Their generous donation of time, equipment and landscape experience laid the groundwork for the restoration of the Gold Street Tree canopy. – Jeff Earney, Wand Williams and Wal-Mart Distribution Center #6070 Associates – for the past few years, these associ- ates have participated in beautification and litter reduction projects in Shelby. These projects have included working with the students and staff at Graham and Jefferson Elementary Schools to plant trees and collecting thousands of pounds of litter from major road ways around Shelby. The Wal-Mart Foundation, through their Volunteerism Always Pays Program, donated $5,000 this year to the Keep Shelby Beautiful Commission to help enhance local recycling efforts. Also a special presentation was made by Lottie Murphy (daughter of Effie Murphy) about her mother’s lifelong com- mitment to keep Shelby beautiful and for whom Keep Shelby Beautiful named its residential appearance award the “Effie Murphy Wallace Residential Appearance Award”.
