Another friend, Mike Pearson, helped John capture the turtle. This breed is the largest freshwater turtle in the state of North Carolina and can be found in all 100 counties. Their average length is 8 to 14 inches and they can weigh from 10 to a little more than 50 pounds. Snapping turtles lay between 11 and 83 round eggs during the late spring and summer and they get their name from their defensive behavior.
