For many of us, this will be the first White Christmas of our lifetime. You have to go all the way back to 1947 before the last one dropped nearly 5” on Shelby. We have some extreme possibilities with this storm folks, so stay tuned to my weatherblog on the internet for up to the minute changes. It appears there is going to be a phasing of 2 jetstreams across the Southeast. This normally occurs in New England, not Georgia. But for a while now the best weather models have been honing in on a rare setup where 2 systems collide in the Gulf of Mexico and begin developing a strong storm. The snow begins in our area around dawn or shortly after on Christmas Day. Then the tricky part is what happens to the gulf low? It may track right up the coast and dump a major snowfall across Georgia and the Carolinas, but if it’s too far offshore, our snow will end quickly without much accumulation. This is too close to call, but our best models have been showing a very deep snowstorm for several runs so its hard to ignore. The potential is huge with this storm, and if all ingredients were to come together as shown exactly, we’d have a once in a lifetime storm to tell our grandkids about one day.
