I never thought about how far I would have to drag a deer or what terrain I might have to overcome, or how long it may take me to get all of the “post hunt” activities done. Before, it never mattered. Now it does. I don’t remember the fi rst time I heard the news that the approximate time be- tween pulling the trigger on a deer and getting back home and sitting down in one’s recliner, was three hours, but I’ve never forgotten it. We’ve all heard that the work starts after shot. And boy is that true. When you think about giving the deer time to expire, fi nding it, fi eld dress- ing it, checking it in, and beginning the processing of the meat, it’s easy to see that a three hour time frame is just about right. The older I’ve gotten, the more I reference this truth. Now, each time I go hunting, I begin to assess my situa- tion with this three hour rule in mind. If I choose to arrow a doe at 7:00 pm, I can know that it will be at least 10:00 pm be- fore I’m ready for bed. And since I’m an early riser, 10:00 pm is pushing it. You get the idea of how I develop my hunts now. This is a familiar farming term to most of us. The way one unknown author ex- panded upon this truth was this; “We reap what we sow, more than we sow, and longer than we sow.” Again, we country folk, know this to be true. Part of my desire to count the cost in deer hunting comes from learning to count the cost in other areas of my life. Many of these lessons came the hard way and the scars are still left as perma- nent reminders. Perhaps it’s these scars that cause me to apply the same princi- ples to my deer hunting. And it might be that the “three hour” rule has served as a good reminder for me to make sure that I understand how long the effects of my next, more important decision, may last. up to their 2010 season There were no tournaments locally last week so I decided to talk to a couple of the local anglers who have turned pro and get a follow up to their 2010 season. I will start will Blacksburg, SC angler and friend Andy Montgomery. Andy followed the FLW trail this past year and had 3 top tens, and more importantly qualified for the FLW Cup event. Also, based on his performance this year he is already qualified for the FLW Cup for 2011. The 28 year old also fished 3 BASS events with a win, and an 11th and 15th place showing. The win was on Smith Lake in Alabama. Andy has qualified for the BASS Master Classic which will be on the Louisiana Delta, out of New Orleans. In 2011 Andy will fish the Bassmaster Elite Series with a few FLW events scattered in as well. As for the local scene, Andy plans to team with Bryan Thrift the first Saturday in November to fish in the Special Olympics/North Shelby School event on Lake Norman. This brings us to Bryan Thrift who is 31 years old and lives in Shelby. Bryan fished the FLW Tour and Series this year and picked up his first win on the series as well as winning the coveted Angler of the Year award. His worst showing was a 21st place finish and for those who don’t know, that’s averaging 100 to 200 anglers in each event. Most importantly for Bryan was the recent birth of his and wife Allisons’ first child. Wylie Thomas Thrift was born 10-18-10 and has taken all of his time to date. However, you can’t wipe the smile off his face (when talking about the baby) with a Brillo pad. Yes, that’s named after his favorite fishing spot, Lake Wylie. I told Bryan it was a good thing he didn’t live in Okeechobee, Florida. In 2011 Bryan will again fish the FLW Tour and Series and he has already qualified for the Championship without making a cast.
