Award winners have overcome a personal or physi- cal adversity that could have been used as an excuse to fail, but instead the student chose to work hard and succeed. In eighth grade Boyd found out he had a rare spinal disease. He lost 65% of his range of movement. He had surgery and had to wear a neck and back brace during ninth grade and still has only limited move- ment in his spine. After graduation, Boyd plans to attend Appalachian State or UNC-G and pursue a degree in biology and go to medical school. Attending the meeting with him were his parents, Greg and Lisa Boyd, and math teacher, Mary Ann Lattimore. Andrews Eighteen Earn Basic Law Enforcement Certifi cates From CCC Students from the Cleveland Community College Basic Law Enforcement Program were honored for their achievements on Wednesday, October 20, during a special graduation ceremony in the Student Activities Center on the CCC campus. The invocation was given by cadet, Jason Dee. Class spokesman Joseph McCraw addressed fam- ily and friends and CCC Coordinator, Basic Law Enforcement, Aaron Vassey gave an overview of the Basic Law Enforcement Training at CCC. Mr. Vassey also presented the class. Graduates of the program are now eligible to be sworn as law enforcement officers through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Commission once they are hired by a law enforcement agency.
