Greater Shelby Community Theatre Greater Shelby Community Theatre presents its season opener on Saturday, October 16th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Cleveland County Arts Center, on Washington Street, on the square, in Shelby. With a theme of “Homegrown,” the theatre will offer short plays by Cleveland County playwrights Tom Bennett of Kings Mountain; Ludy Wilkie of Shelby and a work by Stan Logan of Shelby, performed by the Adventure House Players. Tom Bennett is a nominee for a Metrolina Theatre Association award for playwrighting. Ludy Wilkie is the founder of Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina, which meets monthly in Hendersonville. Refreshments will be served and season tickets will be available. Zone 11 Lions Club Meeting Planned For Lincolnton On Saturday, October 16 The Lincolnton Lions Club will be hosting a Zone 11 Lions Meeting to be held on Saturday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m. @ Boger City United Methodist Church, 2320 East Main Street, in Lincolnton. Target audi- ence will be Lions Club President, Secretaries, Treasurers & Membership Chairpersons in Boiling Springs, Kings Mountain, Lawndale, Shelby Lions; and other invited guest. The Lincolnton Lions Club is serving as host. Key note speak- ers will be District 31-A. Governor George Suggs of Sand Hills Lions Club, Lion Will Hicks, District 31-A Membership Chairperson and Lion Debbie Hicks, District 31-A Retenion Chairperson of the Etowah Lions Club, Lion Jeff Emory and Lions Robert Tomlinson, Zone 11 Chairperson of the Lincolnton Lions Club. Topics to be discussed: District Governors goals and objectives, membership recruitment, orientation, retention and District 31-A Fall Convention. Fall Festival – Halloween Rodeo! The Fall Festival Charity Event – Halloween Rodeo will be held Saturday, October 16th at Paul Mitchell the School, Gastonia, NC, beginning at 12 noon until 5:00 pm. Horse ride package cost $13.00 (horse ride, treat bag and picture); picture only: $5.00; and face painting for $5.00. We will have food, drinks, snacks, pumpkin decorating (for children) and lots of activities for the children and adults. The school is located at 284 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, NC. All proceeds go to: Children’s Miracle Network! Costumes are optional but encouraged. Fall Bulky Item Pick-Up The City of Shelby Solid Waste Department is having the Fall Bulky Item Pick-Up the week of October 18-22. Items such as: furniture, boxes, mattresses, and bagged clothes, etc., will be picked up from the curbside. The Solid Waste Department does not pick-up items such as: appliances, tires, building materials, paints, oils and batteries. Please place bulky items for pickup in your yard at curbside. Do not mix these items with liimbs, leaves, or grass. Do not place any items in the street. Bulky items will only be picked up on the day your garbage is picked up. Items placed on the curb after this week will be subject to citations and fines. Garbage Life Enrichment Center – Relieving Caregiver Stress “Finding Stress Relief for Caregivers” will be the program topic for the regular caregiver meeting at the Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care in Shelby Tuesday, Oct. 19. Counselor Ron McCollum will answer questions and help caregivers find ways to relieve stress. The meeting is free of charge and open to any caregiver. Adults with dementia may attend a free sitter service at the center at the same time, but a reservation must be made by calling 704.484.0405 by Oct. 13. Fall Festival at Woman’s Club, Kings Mtn. The Kings Mtn. Woman’s Club will hold their annual Fall Festival Wednesday, October 20th at the clubhouse, 108 E. Mtn. Street. Menu is: ham or turkey, dressing, gravy, rice, green beans, candied yams, slaw, cranberry sauce, rolls, tea or coffee and homemade desserts. You may eat in or take out. An Evening With David Putnam Friends of the Library are pleased to announce David Putnam’s speaking engagement at Cleveland Community Memorial Library on Thursday, October 21, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Books are available for purchase and author signing. 8th Annual Art of Sound Music Festival in Uptown Shelby The 8th Annual Art of Sound Music Festival in Uptown Shelby, Cleveland County’s largest and oldest music festival, will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 21-23. Sponsored by the Cleveland County Arts Council, over 20 bands, duos, and solo artists of all types will play Thursday and Friday nights and Saturday from about mid-day until late evening. Venues will be an outdoor stage on Washington Street (free, Saturday), the Arts Center and the Don Gibson Theatre. Everything from solo songwrit- ers and performers to jazz, bluegrass, country-rock, and old-time string band music will be featured. Homegrown musical excellence will be joined by artists from Boston, Nashville, New York, Virginia, Texas and North Carolina from Asheville to Wilmington. Southern Christmas Show With Shelby City Park A trip to the Southern Christmas show will be sponsored by the Shelby City Park on Monday, November 15 (located at The Park, formerly Charlotte Merchandise Mart). The group will be leaving from the parking lot at Rutherfordton Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. and from Shelby City Park at 8:30 a.m. They will leave Charlotte to return around 3:30 p.m. and be back to the park around 5 p.m. The cost is $15.00 per person, which is due when signing up. This includes transportation (by Travel Lynx) and the cost of the ticket. Tickets will be given out that morning on the bus.
