Page 28 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, October 14-October 20, 2010 Special Olympics Benefit This year marks the 4th year for the Special Olympics/North Shelby School benefit b Shelby School benefit bass tournament. As with the previous event’s it will be held on Lake Norman and will be on November 6, taking out of and weighing in at Pinnacle Landing. First place is $2,500 with payout to the top 20 and prizes galore. However, this tournament is limited to the first 150 boats and will surely fill up. Entry fee is $100 but the payout, both cash and prizes are well worth any angler’s time. Of all the annual events, the Special Olympics tournament is one of, if not the best run events around. Ricky Peace heads this event up along with Eaton Corporation and they strive to make it very worth while for the anglers and most importantly North Shelby School and Special Olympics. I encourage all anglers reading this to go to the nearest tackle store and get entered in now before it fills up. KOSA The retirees of Kosa fished Lake Norman last week with very good catches. John Black and Roger McNeilly had 14.30 and got the win. Ray Hembree and James Osborne were second with 8.30. They also had big bass of the day with a 3.60 largemouth. Third went to Ronnie Humphries with 7.90. This week it is back to Lake Wylie and with predicted cloud and rain on tournament day, look for very good catches. Moss Nineteen boats fished the weekly Thursday night event on Moss Lake last week. Catches were very close but way down. Brian and Cody Hoyle had 3.99 and got the win, while close behind with 3.95 were Amos Shear and Hasker Stevenson. Reggie and Johnny Guffy had 3.63 and were third, with Mitch and Dustin Gardner in fourth with 2.85. Rounding out the top five was Tommy Chapman with 2.35 and he also had big bass with that 2.35 largemouth. This Saturday is the fish - off for the weekly events and will run from 8am til 2 pm. A PRIVILEGE A PRIVILEGE Hunting on someone else’s land is a privilege and should be regarded as such. It only takes a minute to ask permission to hunt and even less to close gates behind you. Once access to hunt private land is gained, stay safely away from buildings and livestock, pick up yours and anybody else’s spent shells and litter, park only in designated areas, stay out of unharvested fields, offer to help the landowner with chores, seek permission in advance of the next season if possible and always at a reasonable time of day, and share your bag with the landowner and his family. Remember to always ask permission before you hunt on private property and, once you get it, treat the land as if it were your own. Brenda Valentine is co-host of 100% Real Hunting on Versus Network® For more tips, log onto basspro.com Aiming Outdoorsmen oward Christ Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ One of the diffi culties in hunting moun- tainous areas is that we not only have to set our stands up according to the wind directions, but also according to what is called thermals. Thermals are normal wind currents that change as air cools down or heats up. In the evening the cool air falls and when the temperatures heat up in the morning, the warmer air rises. This means that if you are hunting from a tree stand on the top of a ridge in the evening, your scent is most likely going to be carried into the valleys below. If this is the direction the deer are coming from, you’re likely to get busted. The rule of thumb is to set up high in the mornings and low in the evenings. But as you know, it is not always that sim- ple. In my case, the fi eld I want to hunt is on a ridge and I only know what part of the fi eld the deer are showing up at. I want to hunt on the edge of that fi eld but the thermals are falling into the hollows below where, I assume, the deer are coming from. But since I don’t know exactly what path the deer are taking, I’m unsure as to where to put my stand if I were to hunt below. I’ve thought about trying to get about thirty feet high and stay on the ridge, but something tells me it still won’t work. There is one other option. It is to put my tree stand on that ridge and wait for that one day when the wind is blowing pretty hard, carrying the thermals with it, out of the direction of the hollows and valleys. In my case it would be a southerly or south- easterly wind; which is totally against our normal northwesterly current. The question then would be; can I be patient, stay away from that stand, and wait until the condi- tions are right. That question applies to a lot of things in my life. What about yours? Most of my life can be described by the illustration “a bull in a china shop.” I have always tended to think that some- how I am immune to the normal currents of how things work. I thought that since I had “good intentions,” I could charge into any situation, ignoring the certain, and have success. Boy was I wrong! I found out after a few of those blunders, that I was not superman – just man. I found out there are certain natural laws that I had to work within, no matter how great my intentions were. Maybe some of you are thinking about a venture or are getting ready to jump into something that could either bring about great success or great failure. Just remem- ber while faith always calls you to take a risk; it never asks you to do it simply ac- cording to your good intentions. It asks you only to be sure of the One who led you this far. Otherwise, the only difference in your failure will be that it happened to a great guy.
