Rock Having Tax Problems? Richard Wayne Roberts was a Specialist Four in the U.S. Army and served active duty in Vietnam, 14 February 1969 to 20 November 1970. He is a patient at Hospice of Cleveland County, Wendover. This past Tuesday members of the U. S. Army, Marine Corps League, elected officials, family and friends gathered to honor the man whose paperwork had been lost as he was transported, wounded, forty years ago. As a result, he never received the Bronze Star that was awarded to men in his unit. Five years ago, it was discovered that he did not receive his medal. Tuesday, 40 years later, this patient at Hospice came out to the gardens at Wendover, with his wife Stephanie, to a standing ovation. His Pastor, Dr. Timothy Sims and Associate Pastor, Dr. J. M. Ezell from Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby opened and closed the ceremony. Captain Frank Poovey, U. S. Army read the citation and Major Mark McMahan, U. S. Army presented Wayne Roberts his Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Valor Device. Presentations were also made to his son, daughter and his two grandsons. At the end of this special day, Richard Wayne Roberts found enough strength to speak to the crowd. He graciously thanked everyone. Then, acknowledging his best friend in the Army, Ronald E. Robinson, who was killed in Vietnam, he proudly presented Robinson’s picture to the guests, looked up to the heavens and said “I’ll be seeing you soon!” –M. A.
