Rabies Case Confirmed On September 2, 2010 Cleveland County Animal Control received a complaint at 153 Buffalo Church Road, Shelby North Carolina in reference to a skunk on the property displaying abnormal behavior. The Cleveland County Health Department was notified on September 7, 2010 that the skunk tested positive for rabies. This makes the seventh (7th) rabies case in Cleveland County in 2010. Residents need to make sure their animals are under their direct control. Animals that are allowed to run loose are at risk of coming into contact with a rabid animal. If your animals are exposed to a rabid animal and not vaccinated, then your animals will have to be euthanized or quarantined for six months. During the next six months, anyone living in the vicinity of 153 Buffalo Church Road, Shelby, North Carolina should observe their animals for any unusual behavior. In addition, residents need to make sure that all cats, dogs and ferrets have a current rabies vaccination. North Carolina State Law requires all cats and dogs to have rabies shots at four months of age, and require a booster every three years. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior needs to call the Cleveland County Animal Control Department at 481-9884. Speaking to more than 200 members of the National Adult Day Services Association in a pre-conference intensive, Life Enrichment Executive Director Suzi Kennedy led the team in role plays and discussion for their peers, who came from across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Designated a national teaching model by Partners in Caregiving, Life Enrichment Center has welcomed professional caregivers from 23 states, who come to Cleveland County to learn how to create a safe, caring, day health environment for adults of all ages. Also participating in the presentation were Life Enrichment nurses Toni Camp, who is the center coordinator for the Kings Mountain center, and Karen Bridges, who is center coor- dinator for the Shelby center; community outreach coordinators Debbie Vaughan and Linda Cabiness; and intern Russ Putnam. The staff attended other sessions during the 3-day conference to learn ways they can enhance participant experiences and support caregivers at Life Enrichment.
