Here they are lined up, ready to take the fi nal plunge until May 2011. The pool closed on Labor Day at 5:30 p.m. for the season. Shown left to right are Hannah, McCaulley, Rosie, Vero- nia, Avery, Sebastian, Cana, Grace and Max. The lifeguard on the left is Rose Eaker. The Aquatic Center was one of Shelby’s favorite places to go this summer because of the intensive heat. As cookouts fade and fall soon arrives, we get ready for football, fall- ing leaves and the county fair. Labor Day has been celebrated for over 100 years and is recognized as the end of summer vacation time as students re- turn to school and parents get set for cooler weather. –M. A. Andrews Dustin Garver Update & Correction First, let us correct an article we published in our August 25th edition about Dustin Garver. The disease that Dustin has had for 23 years is Cystic Fibrosis not Multiple Sclerosis. The “Hammer” (his nickname) is still at Duke Hospital and is receiving four hours of therapy four days a week. According to his dad, Rick, his attitude remains positive. Presently, it appears that he will not need a liver transplant. He will continue to get therapy and tested at Duke and is being prepared for two lung transplants. Dustin will not return home to Lawndale until the transplants are complete. Our continued prayers are with Dustin and his family. –M. A. A Labor of Love? Mike Bell and Roxanne Hughes are pictured at the Broad River Greenway after returning from a six hour kayaking trek down the Broad for Labor Day excursion. If you consider kayaking for a six hour trip, it has to be a true labor intense exercise. How appropriate! –M. A. Andrews Bradley Ellis To Compete At Nationals Golf For All Ages At River Bend These two youngsters, a brother and sister, brought their own clubs to River Bend’s YMCA Golf Course for some practice. Pictured, their father, Matt Johnson and friends, Katie Thackerson (center) and Courtney Finocchairo (in pink) watch and instruct as Katie-Beth and Tyler get their swings in mo- tion. Both kids love the game and take it very seriously. Their Dad made sure that both have their own set of kiddie golf clubs and it seems to be working because the children just can’t get enough of the game. The Course also offers the youth programs for “The First Tee-Cleveland County”, which chil- dren between the ages of 6-17 can participate. For more details about their programs call (704) 482-4286 or email River Bend YMCA at chaneline@ clevecoymca.org. –M. A.
