Tim and Dina Moffitt Nearly 150 wooden toys were presented to the Salvation Army Christmas Cheer Center Monday morning by the Rutherford County Woodworkers Club members. The toys will be distributed to children on Thursday, December 21 beginning at 9am at the former Fred's store in Parkland Plaza, Rutherfordton, through the Christmas Cheer Center. The variety of toys included helicopters, planes, cars, toys, ducks, dogs with packages of crayons and others. Sgt. Patti Rodgers of the Salvation Army said there are approximately 250 children receiving help from the Salvation Army for Christmas. She was there Monday morning to receive the gifts. The Rutherford County Woodworkers club was founded in 1975 with founding fathers Carl Baynard, Raymond Lee, Melvin Overcash, Wade Philbeck and Max Sisk. Though the members come from many different backgrounds and range from amateur to expert, they share a common love for the beauty of wood and are fascinated by all the useful and beautiful objects that can be made using it. Club members strive to promote the art and craft of woodworking at all skill levels. The club encourages education and community service by sharing ideas and projects with each other; promoting woodworking through displays at fairs, festivals and other venues; and promoting the craft among youth in the community. The club has been involved in woodworking demonstrations at Career Day at Rutherfordton Elementary School and also Heritage Day at Sunshine Elementary School. The club also participates at festivals and fairs including Ellenboro Fair and the Rutherfordton Spring & Fall Fairs on Main Street. For almost 35 years, the Rutherford Woodworkers have made wood toys for girls and boys donated to local charities in Rutherford County during the Christmas season. The primary recipient of the donated wood toys is the Salvation Army. The club meets fourth Tuesday of each month (excluding June, July and December) in Rutherfordton at the Rutherford County Administration Offi ces (Annex Room) located at 289 North Main St., Rutherfordton to share experiences, learn new techniques and tools, and generally enjoy fellowship with folks who love the smell of sawdust. Anyone interested in wood-working is invited and encouraged to attend the meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month and join our woodworking club.
