Thank you for your generosity! WEEKLY RUTHERFORD 157 West Main Street, Forest City Memorial Day in Forest City began with members of The Marine Corps League CPL Chris S. Ebert Detachment #1221 placing American fl ags throughout the downtown area. Later in the morning members of the R-S Central MCJROTC presented the nation's colors to begin the town's annual Memorial Day Ceremony. Master of Ceremonies Don Barrett Sgt. Maj. USMC Ret. stated that this was a day to show gratitude for those armed services members who gave their lives to protect our freedoms and to remember the family and friends they left behind. Forest City mayor Steve Holland welcomed attendees saying that we can't repay those service men and women who gave their lives, we can just honor them. US Army veteran Mark Kunes, representing Disabled American Veterans Post #25, encouraged everyone to assure the survivors that they know they are never forgotten and that every day should be a memorial day. Ray Gaj, a USMC veteran and member of American Legion Post #74, used a familiar phrase "freedom is never free." US Navy veteran Keith Price, representing American Legion Post #423, thanked the Town of Forest City for helping make sure that veterans are not forgotten. Rev. Dale Austin, pastor of the Forest City Church of the Nazarene, shared a reminder to thank God we live in a country where we can do what we want to do but there is a price for that freedom. He added that whatever we do on Memorial Day we should do it with remembrance for those who gave all to protect those freedoms. He encouraged those at the ceremony to pass on the meaning of Memorial Day so that children will not take their freedom for granted. William Swope, USMC, and Larry Lawing, USN, placed a wreath at the Veterans Memorial in Forest City and Richard Thompson, GySgt USMC, played Taps as the ceremony concluded.
