I wonder how much time the average person spends contemplating. There is no doubt that we live in a world fi lled with noise. Being bombarded daily by a plethora of news sources and a multitude of entertainment choices keeps our minds distracted from any contemplative thoughts. Even though they provide much convenience, cell phones are one of the greatest enemies of a refl ective soul. The Psalmist referred to the blessed man contemplating on God's word day and night. There is something rewarding about setting aside time for refl ective thought. As a culture, we put more emphasis on surface and shallowness and have lost the ability for deep thought. Where have all the "Great Thinkers" gone? I am convinced that we will never truly know God until we dedicate ourselves to seasons of contemplation. Shutting out and turning off the noise of this world is a necessity for hearing the still small voice of God. Perhaps we are more comfortable hiding behind the confusion and camoufl age of the world's activity, than spending time searching our soul for a true identity. In the quietness of contemplation, we are able to sort out the motives and priorities of life. Our souls will be enriched when we choose to listen to those that speak to the heart, rather than the voices which have no substance. Carl Sandburg said it best when he said, "It is necessary now and then for a man to go away by himself and experience loneliness; to sit on a rock in the forest and to ask of himself, 'Who am I, and where have I been, and where am I going?'... If one is not careful, one allows diversions to take up one's time—the stuff of life."
