Thursday, May 25-May 31, 2023 www.rutherfordweekly.com 828-248-1408 Rutherford Weekly - Page 19 The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is pleased to announce the winners of the State JAC, Southeastern Division (7 southeastern states) and National levels of judging of the 2022-2023 Junior American Citizens Contest (JAC). This is an annual contest sponsored by the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter to promote good citizenship, history, and patriotism. The National contest's theme for the 2022-2023 school year was "The 200th Anniversary of the Sante Fe Trail: Moving the Stars and Stripes Westward". The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter sponsors the JAC Contest for students in grades 3rd through 8th in public, private, charter and home school situations. The students in 3rd through 5th grades could choose to compete in one or more contest areas which included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, creating original digital art, writing original poetry, writing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay, or conducting and writing about a community service project completed in 2022. Those students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades could compete in one or more categories of drawing a poster, creating original digital art, writing an original poem, writing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay, or conducting and writing about a community service project. The local part of this annual contest began in August of 2022. This year the JAC Contest received 577 entries completed by 645 students from elementary and middle school situations. The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter sent 18 entries, which were our fi rst place winners in Rutherford County. Those 18 entries were in Community Service, Poem, Short Story, Digital Art, Stamp Design, Poster, and Banner, with the total number of students involved being 75. The following students won the following North Carolina State Daughters of the American Revolution JAC awards in 2022- 2023: from ELLENBORO ELEMENTARY- 4th Grader Keyani Bush- 1st Place Stamp Design; from FOREST CITY-DUNBAR ELEMENTARY- 3rd Grader Zoei Cole- 1st Place in Stamp Design: from FORREST W. HUNT ELEMENTARY- 5th Grader- Zoe Velasquez-Castellon- 1st Place in Stamp Design, while the 5th Grade Community Service Project for Veterans completed by 55 students won 1st Place and included the following students Justin Adams, Jayla Arrowood, Nayeli Baker-Lara, Anthony Beheler, Dalton Bridges, Sadie Bridges, Allen Broyles, Brantley Burnett, Aniston Cox, Brayden Cruz, Avianna Derisma, Seeley Dula, Jackson Elliott, Ally Fox, Brinley Greene, Armando Hernandez Elias, Jace Hicks, Luke Hill, Karlie Holland, Jerry Hollifi eld, Jacob Humphries, Jesus Jimenez Perez, Gaven Jolley, Shelby Jones, Teagan Jones, Itzel Guadalupe Juarez, Ancel Juarez-Aragon, Tenzley Keeter, Jackson Lane, Kelsey Lester, Natalie Littlejohn, Madelyn Mayse, Na'Layah McMahon, Kailee Melton, Sayanna Morales, Aaliyah Mosely, Blakelei Owens, Kailiyah Payne, Logan Phillips, Juan Ponce, Dawson Pratt, Alexis Pruitt, Maddox Radford, Kira Rice, Carlos Sauceda-Contreras, Bailee Shade, Kaleb Smith, Charles Snyder, Isabella Suits, Zoe Velasquez-Castellon, Michael Velazquez, Addison Walker, Jamyus Webster, Nevaeh Wharton and Zaylee Wilson; from HARRIS ELEMENTARY- 5th Graders Graydon Shepheard- 1st Place in Short Story and Waylon Jones- 1st Place in Digital Art; from RUTHERFORDTON ELEMENTARY- 3rd Graders Colin Link- 1st Place in Stamp Design, Stephen Mask- 1st Place in Stamp Design; in 5th Grade Alexis Bailey- 1st Place in Stamp Design and Ruby Whiteside- 1st Place in Stamp Design; from SUNSHINE ELEMENTARY- 5th Grader Ridge Warick- Participant in Poem; and from TRINITY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL- 5th Graders Peyton Singleton 1st Place in Poster, Olivia McEntyre, Hadassah Snipes, Savannah Willis, Holden Roper- 1st Place in Banner, 6th Graders Jaylee Reynolds Participant in Poem and CJ McKeithan 1st Place in Short Story, 7th Graders Ashlyn Calvert Participant in Short Story and Isaiah Garcia 1st Place in Short Story and fi nally 8th Grader Shiloh Hostetler Participant in Short Story. At the Southeast Division, Graydon Shepheard, a 5th Grader from Harris Elementary won 2nd Place in Short Story and CJ McKeithen, a 6th Grader at Trinity Christian School won 2nd Place in Short Story, also. The following students won 1st Place at the Southeast Division: Colin Link and Stephen Mask 3rd Graders at Rutherfordton Elementary in Stamp Design and 5th Graders Alexis Bailey and Ruby Whiteside at Rutherfordton Elementary won 1st Place in Stamp Design. Keyani Bush a 4th Grader at Ellenboro Elementary won 1st Place in Stamp Design, while Waylon Jones at Harris Elementary won 1st Place in Digital Art. The following students from Trinity Christian School won 1st place in their entries: Peyton Singleton 5th Grader in Poster, Olivia McEntyre, Hadassah Snipes, Savannah Willis and Holden Roper 5th Graders in Banner, and Isaiah Garcia 6th Grade in Short Story. Those twelve 1st Place winners from Rutherford County having won at the Southeast Division of the JAC judging went on to represent their schools at the National JAC Contest Level. Those entries which were returned with Participation Certifi cates belong to Keyani Bush in Stamp Design from Ellenboro Elementary and Isaiah Garcia in Short Story from Trinity Christian School. Those students who earned National Honorable Mention in Stamp Design and students at Rutherfordton Elementary were Stephen Mask and Alexis Bailey, while Payton Singleton from Trinity Christian School earned Honorable Mention in Poster. National Third Place awards were earned by Zoe Velasquez-Castellon from Forrest W Hunt Elementary and Ruby Whiteside from Rutherfordton Elementary both 5th Graders and both in Stamp Design. The 2nd Place National winners included Colin Link a 3rd Grader who won in Stamp Design, and Olivia McEntyre, Hadassah Snipes, Savannah Willis and Holden Roper who worked on their winning Banner together. Finally, in a new category- Digital Art, Waylon Jones won 1st Place at the National level of JAC Contest judging. Waylon is a 5th Grade student at Harris Elementary. In addition to thanking all the students who submitted entries, the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter's JAC Committee would like to thank all the participating schools' principals, head masters, teachers and parents for choosing to participate in the 2022-2023 JAC contest and for teaching their students about the Santa Fe Trail, which was opened over 200 years ago.
