Memorial Day weekend is the unoffi cial start of summer as many will have a day off from work, some Rutherford County school students are out for the summer and some are on long weekend trips. It's going to be a busy travel season on highways and in the air, we've heard from people who track all the numbers. It's a day when the summer grilling season begins and some water fun begins on lakes. It is a day for family and friend gatherings. Before beginning that Memorial Day "free" weekend for boating, relaxing, walking on the beach or heading to the mountains, you might want to visit the Memorial Day Celebrations in Rutherford County. In the town of Lake Lure, a Memorial Day ceremony begins at 9 a.m. with attention drawn to the many Americans military personnel who died during the wars. A wreath will be placed at the Veterans monument across from the Lake Lure Inn. The Inn will offer a continental free breakfast for all attending At 11 a.m. the Town of Forest City will be the site for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, featuring personnel from all military branches of service. Hosted by the Christopher Ebert Marine Corps League in Forest City (Ebert died in the Iraq confl ict) there will music, speakers and a time of refl ection. It's a day of remembrance. American fl ags will fl y in downtown areas and will be placed in cemeteries where those who sacrifi ced their lives were buried. We also remember another solider who died of complications due to the Iraqi War. Sgt. Brent Hendrix, 36, who as injured in 2006, has a Memorial marker in Arlington National Cemetery. Down through the years, Rutherford County has lost many men to death fi ghting the causes of freedom in wars. During the recent Blue Ridge Honor Flight, the Vietnam veterans from Rutherford County, read some of the names of the Rutherford men who died in that war. We also visited the Korean War memorial and the World War II Memorial. Daddy often told me the story of his uncle Raleigh Rutherford Gordon who at age 18 left his home in Floyd's Creek community to serve in World War II. Crying, he told his mother Lydia Gordon that he would never see her again. He didn't want to go to war, but he had no choice. He never came back. Daddy told how his uncle Pvt. 1st Class Gordon was assigned to the transportation division, where in Belgium, he often drove a jeep for Gen. Patton and other offi cers. On such a mission, he was transporting other offi cers to a staff meeting when bombs began falling from the sky. The jeep was hit. Everyone died instantly. Daddy was 13 years old when he attended Mr. Gordon funeral held at Floyd's Creek Baptist Church. He'd never seen anything like it before, he told me. He recalled the fl ag covered casket and fl ag folding ceremony and "Taps" played in the distance. Daddy said he remembered crying like a baby. Pvt. 1st Class Gordon's obituary was published in "Real Heroes" column in Feb. 8, 1945 in the Forest City Courier. The obituary read: "Private First Class Raleigh R. Gordon, ages 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward D. Gordon of the Floyd's Creek community, Mooresboro Route 1, was killed in action in Arlon, Belgium on January 15, 1945. He had served the U.S. Army overseas since May of 1944." Up until a few years ago I'd never visited my great-uncle's grave. I am glad I fi nally did that. The men and women across the country who died during World War I, World War II, the Korean Confl ict, the Vietnam War and Iraq War will be remembered Monday at ceremonies, cemeteries and in our hearts. We can take a moment and refl ect on our military who paid the greatest sacrifi ce. Go visit a cemetery. Take a quiet walk and read the names of monuments identifying those buried who died in wars. Remember what these fl ags stand for today — our freedoms. They died so we could live. We will not forget. The community is encouraged to donate blood to help those who have been seriously injured and need blood products to help them recover. It's the blood already on the shelves that helps save lives. You are invited to donate on any of the following dates: • Fri., May 26, 12:30-5:30PM; Bill's Creek Community Center; 198 Club House Rd., Lake Lure • Tues., May 30, 12-4:30PM; Congregational UCC, Fellowship Hall; 210 Melrose Ave., Tryon Every day, the American Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations to meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. While all blood types are needed, type O negative donors are especially important. Because it is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients of any blood type, type O negative blood is what emergency personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations. To make an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood. org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Completion of a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Article Provided By: Gail Barksdale Give blood to help trauma patients
