Lady Titans pound out 4 wins in Tennessee tourney By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports drhoops25@gmail.com After topping Sullivan 7-2 in the 2023 season opener last Tuesday, the Gibson Southern High School Softball team headed to Tennessee for a five- game tournament in Murfrees- boro on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Lady Titans played a sin- gle game on Thursday, taking on Middle Tennessee Chris- tian High School, and Gibson Southern came away with a 13-1 victory, giving GSHS a 2-0 record on the early season. On Friday, the Lady Titans tangled with Plainview High School (Alabama) in a noon encounter. Gibson Southern came out on the short end of an 8-6 score to drop to 2-1 on the year, but at 2 p.m., the Lady Titans regrouped to dominate Rogers High School (Florence, Alabama) in a 17-5 win to up their season mark to 3-1 on the early diamond campaign. Saturday at 10 a.m., Gibson Southern took on Cascade High School (Wartrace, Tennessee), and once again, the Lady Titans dominated the contest scoring a 9-0 triumph to up their record to 4-1 on the year. The Lady Titans immediately returned to the diamond at noon to challenge Carterville High School (Carterville, Illi- nois), and once again, Gibson Southern came away with a victory, this time winning 13-9 and bringing home a 5-1 season record after six games. "We had a great three days of softball in Tennessee," said GSHS Softball Coach Gary May Sunday evening, "We won four of the five games we played, and the only loss was to Plainview, a team that won back-to-back Alabama State Softball Championships in 2021 and 2022. "We hit the ball well, and overall, our defense and our pitching was very good also. "We have not had time to do all of the statistics from our first six outings, but I do know that we have several girls hitting around .500." Freshman pitcher Carly Potts got the win in the first game of the road trip, starting the con- test against Middle Tennessee Christian and pitched the first four innings. She did not allow a hit. Junior Callie Dickerson came on to finish up in relief. Potts went three for three at the plate against Middle Tennessee Christian, hammering out a pair of doubles and driving in three runs, while sophomore Lauryn Adamson and senior Alexis Tucker each went two for two in the trip opener. Tucker had three RBIs in the encounter. Dickerson went two for three at the plate and had one RBI in the first game of the trip south, and junior Ally Malone had a pair of double and two RBIs in three trips to the plate in the game. In Friday's first game of the day, the Lady Titans took on the two-time defending Ala- bama State Champions, losing by a narrow 8-6 score. Tucker took the loss on the mound, but at the plate the veteran went two for three with two RBIs, while senior Em- maLee Higgs hit a home run in three at bats. Dickerson and Potts both poked doubles in the game. Against Rogers (Florence, Al- abama), Dickerson got the nod to start on the mound, and Potts came on in relief, pitching the final five innings of the outing, striking out four. Saturday morning, against Cascade, Potts started the fray and pitched a one-hitter enroute to the 9-0 victory. In addition to her performance on the pitching mound, Potts hit a home run to support her effort on the hill. Malone went three for three in the game, banged out a home run of her own, and drove in five runs. The Lady Titans continue to hit the softball in the final game of the four-game south swing, as they finished the trip with a wild come-from-behind 13-9 win over Carterville, Illinois. The two teams exchanged lead changes several times over the seven-inning affair. Tucker started the contest, but junior Morgan Burgess came on in relief to get the win. Senior Sydney Long went three for three at the plate, banging out a double and driving in two runs, five other Lady Titans had two hits in the encounter. Dickerson went two for three, with two RBIs, and Burgess also went two for three at the plate, banging out a single and hammering a double. Tucker had two hits in four at bats and drove in two runs. One of her hits was a double. Higgs and Potts both had a pair of hits in four official trips to the plate, while Malone had a double in four tries at the Carterville pitching. She had one RBI. "We really hit the ball well all four games on the trip," said May, "I think we are going to have a very good hitting team this year, and I believe our pitching is solid." Gibson Southern will return to action on the diamond on Thursday in Carmi, Illinois, when the Lady Titans will play Carmi-White County High School in a contest scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Titans will take part in the annual Vin- cennes Lincoln High School Classic, where they will tangle with Fishers High School at 11 a.m., then challenge Floyd Central High School at 1 p.m. Next Monday, Gibson Southern will play host to Evansville Mater Dei at Titan Field in a game slated for 5:30 p.m., and a day later, next Tuesday, the Lady Titans will travel to Evansville to take on Evans- ville Memorial in an encounter scheduled for 5 p.m. We've been giving it to South Gibson and the surrounding counties for a long time, why not share what news you have with others?
