They are only graduating three people from that team as five of their state finalists were sophomores. "We have a ton of kids who qualified for state coming back," said Boys Track Coach Ron Kahle. "It isn't normal to have sophomores with that much success," said Kahle. Last year's team had the best one-two combination of throwers Coach Kahle had ever coached in Hank Kissel and Sloan Cox. They typically finished first and second in both the discus and shot put, even in the big meets. Both qualified for the state finals. "I feel pretty good about who we are replacing them with. I don't think we have a 60 -foot shot puter, but I think we have one in the 50s and we don't have 165 in discus, but I have a couple in the 150s maybe. Brock Fauqher is a senior returning who could have won a lot of meets except for Kissel and Cox." He has already thrown more than 46 feet indoor and qualified for the state indoor meet," said Kahle. Junior Nicholas Agee will also throw. "We are looking for a big improvement from him. I think he can get in the 40s. Two freshmen will also help in the throw department. Brody Klem and Bobby Robinson were one and two in the Middle School PAC last year. I expect them to be in the 40s before the year is over," said Kahle. "Senior Jackson Redding is coming off a knee injury in football. He is back. He will be pretty solid for us. Last year he threw 44 or 45 feet in the shot," said Kahle. Redding threw in upper 140s last year in discus. Kahle said Brodey Toy can be pretty good. He threw about 135 last year. Brock will be between 125 and 135. Another senior who was a state qualifier last year is Ethan Spindler in the high jump after clearing 6'4" in the regional to take third. Chandler McCade returns in the pole vault where he cleared 13' in regional for sixth place. Coach Kahle said McCade might be involved in some of the relays and Spindler in middle distance events. "But their focus is going to be on the high jump and pole vault." The Titans return all four members of their state qualifying 4x800 relay team: Alex Spindler, Lucas Kissel, Cooper Maurer and Wyatt McEliney. Spindler, who won the Pocket Athletic Conference cross country meet and placed 67th out of 205 in the state finals, will be running the 1600 and 3200. He will join Hayden Pennington in the distance events. Pennington placed 13th in the 3200 in the regional and 10th in the 1600. Cooper Maurer turned in a top time of 2:01.44 in the 800 last year as a sophomore. "Cooper can run anything from the 400 and up. Last year he was a really strong 800 runner. I expect him to be strong again this year," said Kahle. "Landon Kiesel ran hurdles last year. He will do that and run mid-distance for us this year," said Kahle. Lucas Kissel ran the 400 and 800 and will again this year. McEliney will run middle distance and probably the 4x800 again. "We are still trying to figure out who best fits where, to give us the most points. A trio of juniors will head up the sprinters for Gibson Southern. Daniel Thomas finished fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 at the sectional last year. He will be joined by football players Sean DeLong and Mason Scheller. All three return from last year's school record 4x100 relay team. Lucian Wicker will run hurdles. He had a strong season for the Titans last year, finishing fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 110 hurdles at the sectional. "He has been running hurdles since he was a freshman," said Coach Kahle. Sophomore Beau Rose is going to be a sprinter as well as long jump and maybe pole vault. "He ran the 400 last year because we needed a 400 runner, but he will probably move to shorter distances this year. He will be very competitive in the long jump," said Kahle. This year's team may not have the dominant athletes in some events like they did last year in the throwing events, but it is going to have more depth. "We have people who will be competitive in every event. There isn't an event where we will not be competitive this year," said Kahle. Kahle hopes with all the returning state finalists being a year older and a lot of solid performers with another season of experience, they can do well in the conference, sectional and regional again this year.
