First Ave., Princeton 812-385-4431 walterarnettcpa.com By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports drhoops25@gmail.com Coach Gary May and his Gibson Southern Lady Titans opened the 2023 season in style last Monday afternoon racing past visiting Sullivan 7-2 in girls' high school softball action. Senior Alexis Tucker pitched a complete game in the season-opener, striking out eight Lady Golden Arrows, while giving up just five hits and allowing no earned runs in her seven innings on the mound. She did not walk a hitter. Sullivan scored one run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead over the hosts, Gibson Southern came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 advantage. The Lady Titans plated another two runs in the bottom of the third frame to up their lead to 4-1, and in the bottom half of the fifth inning GSHS put another pair of runs across home plate to take a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the eventual winners scored another run to put the Lady Titans up 7-1. Sullivan pushed home a run in the top of the seventh in- ning to account for the final 7-2 score and a victory for Gibson Southern. Both pitchers were tough to hit on the day, as the Lady Titans and the Lady Golden Arrows both mustered just five hits in the encounter. Tucker helped her own cause in the game with a dou- ble, while senior Sydney Long, juniors Alloy Malone and Carly Dickerson, and sophomore Lauryn Adamson all popped singles for the Lady Titans in the season opener. Long, Tucker, and senior Taylor Fonte all worked Lady Golden Arrow pitching for a walk, while senior EmmaLee Higgs, junior Morgan Burgess, and freshman Carly Potts each reached first base after being hit-by-a-pitch. Fonte and Burgess were both credited with a sacrifice at bat for the Lady Titans. "We played well for a season-opener," said May after the game, We need to hit the ball better, but in the early part of any season, the pitching is always ahead of the hitting. "It was a good win for us, and it will provide us with a positive outlook as we head to Tennessee later this week for four games." Now 1-0 on the early sea- son, the Lady Titans traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on Thursday, where they played a four-games series with "non-In- diana" opponents in three days. Gibson Southern faced Middle Tennessee Christian on Thursday, then took on Plain- view (Rainsville, Alabama) and Rogers (Florence, Alabama) on Friday. On Saturday, GSHS closed out the journey with Cascade High School (War- trace, Tennessee). Titan Softball Wins Opener Gibson Southern four All-Conference players for 2022-2023.
