Romans 10:9 Wake Forest University to Play Appalachian State University in Shelby....Free Admission The Amer- ican Legion World Series (ALWS) Exec- utive Commit- tee is pleased to announce that the Wake Forest Uni- versity De- mon Deacons will host the Appalachian State University Mountaineers in a regular season game at Shelby High School's Kee- ter Stadium at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26. Wake Forest is giving up one of its home games to play the game in Shelby as a tribute to the late Jim Horn, a Wake For- est graduate, a close friend to Wake Forest Head Baseball Coach Tom Walter and a leader in the effort to have Shelby-Cleve- land County become the offi cial home of the ALWS. Jim Horn and his wife Linda were both vol- unteers for the ALWS from the initial work to bring the series to Shelby. Linda Horn is still an active volunteer and has spearhead- ed the preparations for the April 26 game. Jim Horn served as co-chairman with Eddie Holbrook from 2002, when Shel- by-Cleveland County hosted the American Legion Baseball Southeast Regional, until his death in 2015, the fi fth year with Keeter Stadium as home to the ALWS. Jim Horn played football and baseball at Wake Forest and was a member of the col- lege's 1955 national championship base- ball team. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 82 team that won the 1951 state championship. "You can't beat a deal like this – a free col- lege game on Veterans Field and a tribute to a tremendous athlete and friend of the ALWS!" says Holbrook, who still serves as the local committee chair. " At the time of this writing, Wake Forest was in fi rst place in the Atlantic Coast Con- ference and ranked second nationwide. Appalachian State is posting a winning season, also. The gates at Keeter Stadium will open at 4:00 PM the day of the game; there is no admission fee. The free admission is a "thank you" to the community for its support of the ALWS. American Legion Post 82 will open the main concession stand at 5:00 PM; the menu will include barbecue, hot dogs, chicken salad, nachos, popcorn, soft drinks, candy, and ice cream. w w w.americanlegionworldseries.com 704.466.3103 . info@alws.us Submitted by Judy Gaultney
