Katrina Shauf, a senior at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, won fi rst place and received a prize of $500 dollars. She will advance to higher competition. Kathryn Jones of Shelby High took the second-place prize of $300 dollars. Addi- son Wease, also of Shelby High, took the third prize of $200 dollars. Judges for the event were Shelby City Councilman Charles Webber, District Court Judge Ali Paksoy, and Gardner Webb University professors Courtney Alston, June Hobbs, Bobbie Cox, and Perry Hildreth. CHARLES RAY HEFFNER Mr. Charles Ray Heffner, 74, of Grover, NC, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2023. He is survived by two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a brother, Johnny Heffner (Judy), and a sister, Barbara Adams (Jerry). Born August 28, 1948, in Cleveland County, NC, Charles was the son of the late Mozon Heffner and Lucille Patterson Heffner and was preceded in death by his children, Cindy Heffner Callahan and Billy Heffner, a granddaughter, and a broth- er, Tommy Heffner. Funeral services were held January 6, 2023 at Patterson Springs Baptist Church con- ducted by Rev. Steve Waters and Rev. Eugene Passmore. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
