Titans scores with 5.8 seconds left to beat THS 27-20 By Andy Heuring Star-times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Tanner Boyd hit Sean De- Long with a shovel pass from the three-yard line, who gath- ered it in and dove across the goal line with 5.8 seconds on the clock giving the Titans a hard-fought 27-20 win in their season opener against 5A Terre Haute South. "It was something we had been wanting to do all game, but we just never got the op- portunity to run it until that play. Ever y time we wanted to run it, someone was hurt or out of the game cramping," said Titan Coach Nick Hart. "It was not a pretty game. We have a lot of things we have to clean up. But that last drive was a thing of beauty," said Hart. With the game tied 20-20, Gibson Southern's defense came up with a four-and-out, forcing a punt. The Titan offense took over at their own 32-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. It started slowly. Devan Roberts went for three and Boyd ran for 12 yards and a first down. A quick pass for six yards to Isaac O'Neal and eight to DeLong got the Titans across midfield to the TH South 47 yard line with 49 seconds to go. Roberts on second down went 10 yards for a first down at the 39-yard line. On second down with 26 seconds left, Boyd ran for 8 yards and then on third down he split Brave defenders and went up the middle for 15 yards to the six yard line, giv- ing Gibson Southern first and goal. Terre Haute jumped off- sides putting the Titans at the three-yard line with 11 sec- onds on the clock. "We had the play called for a long time. We were just wait- ing for the right time, and they executed perfectly," said Hart of the shovel pass to DeLong. It was a win that early on looked 'iffy' at best. Terre Haute South had started the game with a kick- off return to the Titan 45-yard line. They then overcame a holding and offsides penalty with impressive runs by their big tailback, Josh Cottee. On the first drive he had runs of 5, 16, 8, 7, 5, 1, 8, 3 and finally 3 for a touchdown with 6:15 left in the quarter.
