South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, August 23, 2022 A-5 BBB: Beware phishing scam Tri-State Better Business Bureau is getting repor ts that text messages posing as bank customer ser vice are being sent to local area residents. The messages urges targets to take imme- diate action after allegedly detecting an unusual trans- action. The sender states that the cards are temporar- ily locked, and the situation can be resolved by calling a phone number given in the body of the same text mes- sage. "Unfor tunately, this is quite a popular phishing scam. You may receive these messages whether you have an account with the bank mentioned in the text message of not. For those of you who happen to have one, it's impor t- ant to not engage with the text message or its sender and contact your bank at a phone number you know to be cor rect," says Oana Schneider, Director of Me- dia Ser vices for the Better Business Bureau in Evans- ville. If you received one of these text messages: - Do not reply to these messages or you might un- knowingly confirm to the sender that your phone number is an active one. - Don't click on any links, attachments, or phone num- bers, as they may lead you to a scam website or to a scammer's phone number. - Block the sender's phone number To repor t a scam, vis- it bbb.org/scamtracker (https://t.e2ma.net/click/ g1xbr f/cisr7e/gtv4lg). Pizza fundraiser totals $1,100 for injured girl Monroe Pizza Company presented the family of Oakland City sixth grader Josselyn Lynn a check for $1,100 Saturday for the proceeds of their pizza fundraiser (reported in last week's Star-Times) for her medical care after she was hit from behind by a car. According to the family, she hopes to be medically cleared by doctors at the end of the month. GCSO pursuing registry violators By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Gibson County Sheriff's Officers told the County Council in their August meeting the department is cracking down on violators of the sex offender registr y. According to Capt. Bruce Vanoven, for the GCSO, the department has had 14 recent cases and 14 convic- tions of offenders not abid- ing by registr y guidelines. "We've lost none. If any- one knows of an of fender who is not following the registr y, give us a call, ask for Lisa. We'll make it num- ber 15," he said.
