There was no list available of games won or lost. SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, August 1 and 5, 1947 Couple Celebrates Golden Wedding: Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Brenton will entertain in hon- or of their Golden Wedding Anniversary at their home in the Beck community Sun- day, August 3rd. Friends are invited to a basket dinner at noon and to spend the day. The bride, fifty years ago, was Miss Lily Willis and she and Mr. Brenton were mar- ried by Rev. Riley Barrett at his home west of Petersburg. They have spent their entire lives in this community. They have three sons who with their families will also be present to enjoy the celebra- tion. They are Mr. and Mrs. Byron Brenton of Chandler, N. C.; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Brenton, of Connorsville; and Mr. and Mrs. Fonnie Bren- ton, of Cuba, Mo. New Marquee On Lincoln Theatre: The Lincoln The- ater is modernizing its front with a new neon sign to re- place the old style. The sign and other material now on the side of the Scraper De- partment Store will also be removed. UMW President John L. Lewis and Hugh White, Illi- nois UMW President, spoke to a reporter on grounds of the Old Ben Mine No. 8 at West Frankfort, ILL., during investigation of the explosion which killed 27 miners and injured three. Over $2,000,000 Cigarette Taxes: Total revenue for the first month's operation of the state's new cigarette tax lax amounted to $2,008,938.23, the Alcoholic Beverage Com- mission reported Friday The ABC charged with enforce- ment of the law and collection of the tax, said $1,902,938.23 had been collected from stamps and meter readings and receipts from the re- quired certificates of regis- tration totaled $106,000. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Aug. 2, 1962 Murder Trial Venued to Pike County: Sgt. Jimmy Ray Wilson, 29, will be tried in Pike Circuit court for the murder of his wife, Walda Wilson, 27, his father-in-law, Walter Stocky, 49, and Ronald Birkhead, 29. The triple slay- ing took place in Evansville and would have been heard in the Vanderburgh county court. However, Wilson's at- torneys asked for a change of venue on the ground of com- munity prejudice. Judge Les- ter Nixon is slated to hear the case. No date has been set for the trial. Wilson is being held without bond for the shot- gun slaying of the trio and will probably be transferred to the Pike county jail at the time of his trial. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Augusta 3, 1972 Several Robberies Report- ed in Area: The county was hit with a rash of robberies Thursday night or early Fri- day as break-ins and stolen goods were reported from Seven Lakes at Campbell- town to the Surgeon area. County sheriff investigated the robberies and conclud- ed that they all could have been committed by the same persons, however, he had no proof that they were. At Seven Lakes two campsites were broken into. The Dick Butrum camp was entered by cutting a screen in a window. A minin bike, 10" T V, and a portable radio were stolen. At the Arthur Beech camp a tent was entered and a hot plate stolen. In Winslow, the Satterfield and Nelson Ser- vice Station was broken into. Cigarettes, candy, cigars, and chewing gum was stolen. Frank Gieseman and Larry Luff both had a box of tools stolen. Another box of tools were stolen from Kermit Wil- liam's pickup truck. A Skil saw and electric drill was taken from the Eskel Berlin place in Winslow. The rob- beries are still under investi- gation. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 31, 1997 Bids for Remodeling Old Gym $200,000 over esti- mates: Winslow Town Coun- cil rejected all bids to re- model the Old Winslow High School Gym during their meeting Monday night. They then spent about two hours with the Park and Recreation board discussing ways to re- duce the cost of remodeling the Old Winslow High School Gym by more than $ 300,000. Architect Bud Erny of Vin- cennes presented a list of major cuts in his original design to reduce the cost of the project Bids were opened two weeks ago and they were more than $200,000 over bud- get. Roger Duncan Promoted to Cashier at National City: The Board of Directors of the National City Bank of Evans- ville recently announced the promotion of Roger M. Dun- can to Cashier. Duncan came to National City Bank in June of 1995 from Spurgeon State Bank, a member of National City bancshares, as Exec- utive Vice-President over retail lending and banking centers. A fter six months, his position grew to include overseeing loan operations, leading to his current posi- tion as Cashier. Abigail Benjamin Crowned 1997 Miss Pike County 4-H Fair Queen: Four Pike Coun- ty 4-H Fair pageant contes- tants were selected to rep- resent pike County in three separate contests during the Pike County 4-H Fair. Abigail Benjamin was selected Sat- urday night as the 1997 Miss Pike County 4-H Fair Queen from 10 girls competing for the title. She was also chosen as the Speech award recipi- ent. The 18 -year-old Benja- min is the daughter of Cathy Hayes of Petersburg and Tim Benjamin of Winslow. Cassie Whittington was named First runner-up and Andrea Mc- Laughlin was chosen as the second runner up.
