SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, July 25 and 29, 1947 Mysterious Bullet Hits Boy At Play: Philip Wineinger, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wineinger of Velpen, was shot in the left fore arm with a rifle bullet Thursday afternoon while playing in the yard at the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Os- gathorpe, in Otwell. It is not known who fired the shot. The boy removed the bullet himself and dropped it into the yard. Later search failed to reveal the bullet, but phy- sicians at the hospital said the wound was made by a .22. A fter receiving treat- ment, the boy was returned to the Osgathorpe home. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. According to Mrs. Osgathorpe no shoot- ing had been heard up to the time the boy was struck. However, later in the after- noon the report of rifle fire could be heard in the neigh- borhood and several times bullets could be heard whiz- zing overhead. Teacher Outlook: In 1920, 22 percent of all college stu- dents in the United States were attending teachers college; in 1945 -46 only 7 percent. Pike County Man Wit- nesses Murder: Bill A rnold who lives near Winslow says he was in Boonville, Saturday and was an eye- witness to the murder-sui- cide which occurred on the crowded street Saturday af- ternoon. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, July 26, 1962 Sharon Mehne, Jim Riney Presented Gray Citizenship Awards- $50 Each:The 1962 Gray Citizenship awards have been won by Jim Riney of the Union Eagles 4-H club and Sharon Mehne of the Otwell Farmerettes. The awards, $50 in cash, are pre- sented annually to the most outstanding 4-H club boy and girl in Pike County through the courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Carl M. Gray. Jim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Riney of Hazelton. He has been a 4-H club member for seven years during which time he has completed a to- tal of 23 projects. Sharon is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Mehne of Otwell. She has been a 4-H club member for seven years during which time she has completed a to- tal of 33 projects. As a part of the presentation, the judge read the composition which each member had to submit in the competition. Deaths: Major John Davis, 45, of San Antonio, Texas, twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Er- vin Davis of Petersburg, died suddenly Thursday, in his car in a friend's garage from a heart attack; Mrs. Georgia F. Richardson, 42, died Mon- day, July 23, at her home after a long illness; Mrs. Bertha E. Erwin, 73, of Petersburg, died Thursday, July 19; Mrs. Daisy L. Brown, a former Winslow business woman, died Friday in an Indianapolis nursing home; Kelly Lynn Shoultz, 18 day old daughter of Doyle and Sharon Sharp Shoultz, of Chandler, died July 18, in the Deaconess hospital. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 27, 1972 Zoe Ann Crecelius was awarded championship award at the Pike County 4-H Fair in the dress revue divi- sion of the clothing project. Crecelius will participate in the State dress revue at the Indiana State Fair. Man Loses Artificial Leg In Mud Slid At Work: Joe Horath, 33, of Princeton, a haulage truck driver at Black- foot mine north of Winslow, was injured at the mine at 12:30 p.m. Thursday and is a patient in the Gibson General hospital. Mr. Horath received bruises and contusions when a mud slide from a high wall pinned him against the front end of a pay loader. The mud came up around his waist. As he was being pulled out of the mud by fellow workers he lost his artificial leg. Around five years ago while working as a drill helper, at the mine, and was watching a welder, a drill stem blew up injuring one of his legs which had to be am - putated. Rainfall Of Up To Five Inches Hit County Tuesday: Rainfall varied from torren- tial rains of up to five inches in the southern part of the county to about a quarter of an inch in the northern part of Pike County on Tuesday morning. Rain is just what farmers in the area needed. "It has been about five weeks since we've had a measurable rain," said Allen Schnieder of IMC Farm Market in Otwell.
