Postcards and notes of interest at Sweet's Column, Winslow, IN 47598 is "What are dragonflies in your area good for?" Since last we talked, the Patoka River is lower than half full with a two day rain of two inches, with thunder and lightening. The White River is to over- flow its banks and the Wa- bash River is almost up to its banks. The cor n and beans are looking like they should in the growing season and the winter wheat is cut and bailed. The wild flowers along the road ways are still in blooms of white and yel- low. I saw a field of sunflow- ers and lots of yards with small and large gardens. We were out on the interstate when the mowing crew did a great job to make our high- ways and bi-ways feel like you are welcomed in our area. We also saw three crop dusting planes as the looped over the interstate and then passed over the field to dust. We are in another 90 de- gree heat wave where the index rises to 101-115 de- grees. The nighttime temp is in the 70s, so the air con- ditioner is still on. Norm has been busy with mowing and cleaning "Blue", our work tr uck, and she really need- ed the detailing. I rode the rider mower to the cabin on a nice after noon to look at a dif ferent view. This view was of the park (Norm named it Barb's Park) and it looks even better than I would have imagined with trees dotting the area, a steam or ditch that flows nicely now. Someone said to set up a table , so we tried one table and it just didn't work for us. I also rode the rider all over each lot and noticed the mul- ber ries are still hanging on and are sweet. There are constr uction cones set up at three loca- tions on the highway, but on one site, the speed limit was 55 mph, flashing on the sign, so we all slowed down when a small car came zooming by all of us. Then, we heard sirens on the motorcycle of the state police. He was stopped fur ther up the road. We don't know where the state policeman was going, but was pleased he stopped this driver who doesn't obey the constr uction site speed limit. September 17 is the Winslow Community Fes- tival and Light Up Winslow Parade. There will be a shut- tle from Riverside Park to Main and Center Streets. The tractor show will be at the Riverside Park spon- sored by the Winslow Lions Club. Many stars will love to show of f their dif ferent type of tractors. Not to much time to figure out what to light up in the parade and if you watch the parade and you are by a street that comes into Main Street from Union to the spor ts field, could you all do us a big favor and block that street with a vehicle or a group of stars with lawn chairs set up so no vehicles will enter the parade. Thank you all for helping keep our stars safe. Oh yes, please stand by the curbs to catch your candy or other items thrown. Don't get hur t. This is a fun event. The Winslow Town work- ers have been busy in this heat to mow and weed eat, plus the other jobs need- ed for the month, Winslow looks inviting with weeds and grass cut to their right length. Time to stop talking and dim the lights for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends, especially with this heat wave, slow down and see all the wonders in your area, wear your mask inside where crowds are to keep them safe, then as always smile, wave and say hi to ev- er yone you see this week.
