50 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, June 30, 1972 Ed Reinhar t is greeting Father Michael Conrad, new assistant pastor; and Bill Miller, wishes a fond fare- well and extends best wish- es to Msgr. Clinto Hirsch, at the reception which was held on Sunday evening at Holy Cross. Thomas H. Klusmeier, sub-r ural carrier, on Rural Route No. 1, For t Branch, was honored on Friday eve- ning, June 16, with a retire- ment par ty at the river camp of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth V. Blackard. Mr. Klusmeier retired after ser ving over 45 years as sub-carrier He began his career on Nov. 6 1923, and has ser ved contin- uously since August of 1934. He began delivering mail in the days of the horse and buggy and the mud roads. During his career he has made many friends along the route and has ser ved his route well under some ver y adverse weather conditions. Mr. Klusmeier ser ved under four postmasters and five regular r ural carriers during this period. Area horses par ticipating at the Audubon Raceway in Henderson, Ky., this season are listed below with their owners for the convenience of persons in the communi- ty. Williams, 44, passed away Saturday, at Deaconess Hospital. 45 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, July 1, 1977 "Cor rie: Behind the Scenes with The Hiding Place," a new full-length col- or release from World Wide Pictures, will be shown at For t Branch General Bap- tist Church. John and East- view Streets, For t Branch, on Sunday, July 3. A single showing is scheduled to be- gin at 7:30 p.m. "The Hiding Place," a tr ue stor y filmed in Holland and other Europe- an locations, is based on the experiences of Cor rie ten Boom, who, with her father, sister, and brother, provid- ed refuge for countless Jew- ish families. A secret room was constr ucted in their home as hiding place for use during Gestapo raids. The ten Boom's activities were discovered, and they were sent to prisons and concentration camps. Ac- cording to Kenneth Bliss, Director of Distribution for World Wide Pictures, The Hiding Place has been ex- tremely well-received, both by audiences and film crit- ics. "Cor rie' was produced to give people who have seen The Hiding Place or read her many best-sell- ing books an oppor tunity to hear her share many of her memories about her life in Holland, her family, and her lifetime of ser vice to others." Bliss added that the film "of fers a great les- son in the perseverance of a personal faith in a ver y dark and tr ying period of world histor y. Cor ri ten Boom, now in her eighties, has a tremendous vitality, a deep spiritual commitment, and a profound love for her fellow man. We believe we have succeeded in transmitting a par t of her zest, personal- ity, and source of strength through this film." Bliss noted that the film includes "interesting sidelights on the experiences of the cast and crew during the filming of The Hiding Place. The Haubstadt Class of 1952 will hold their 25 year class reunion on Saturday, July 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Haub Steak House. All members of the class have been notified, except Miles Reynolds. Bent, 77, of For t Branch, passed away Saturday, June 25, in Gibson General hospital; Theresa Margaret Seib, 82, passed away Friday, June 24, at Dea- coness hospital. 35 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Thursday, July 2, 1987 Three Haubstadt children were winners of the Beau- tiful Baby Contest held at the Haubstadt Sommer- fest. The first prize of a $50 Savings Bond was award- ed to 22-month-old Chris- topher Gries. Christopher is the youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Gries of r ural Haubstadt. Second prize of $25 was awarded to Erin Harpenau. She is the 13-month-old-daugh- ter of Richard and Connie Harpenau. Ten-month-old Valen Eberhard won the $10 third prize. Valen is the daughter of Ron and Vonda Eberhard. There were 20 beautiful babies entered in the annual contest. Right to Life of Gibson County spon- sored the event and thanks all those who entered and those who par ticipated in the voting. Permanent Federal Sav- ings Bank has announced the appointment of Joseph F. Stofleth as manager of its newly constr ucted For t Branch of fice. Stofleth, a vet- eran of 20 years in the Thrift Business, is a Evansville na- tive and a graduate of Mater Dei High School. He is past president of the Evansville West Side Kiwanis Club and a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He and his wife have two sons. Laura G. Wright, Route 1, For t Branch, has won a four- year college scholarship from Snap-On Tools Corpo- ration, a Wisconsin-based For tune 500 company. Laura plans to study political sci- ence and foreign languages this fall at Indiana Universi- ty in Bloomington. Laura is the daughter of Georgia E. and Ricahrd D. Wright. Rich- ard Wright is super visor of the tool room at the Snap- on plant in Mt. Carmel, Ill. Deaths: Ruby Strickland, 82, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, June 23. 25 YEARS South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, July 1, 1997 A South Gibson area church, considered to the first Catholic church in Gib- son County, is celebrating its 150th year anniversar y. And several celebrations are planned for the 150th anniversar y celebration of St. James Catholic Church. Church of ficials said those people associated with St. James Church are welcome to attend the anniversar y celebrations. A Latin sung mass will be conducted at St. James Church Friday, July 25 beginning at 5:30 p.m. during the Feast of St. James the Greater. Mem- orabilia of church ar ticles will be available. A histor y book depicting events at St. James Church from 1847 until 1997 will be available for sale. The more than 200- page histor y book contains over 200 pictures. Sesqui- centennial planning com- mittee member Mar y Ellen Ziliak said 500 of the histor y books were printed and 330 of those books are already sold. Blake E. Titzer M.D. has recently completed family practice residency program at St. Mar y's Medical Center in Evansville. Before star t- ing the residency program in July 1994, Titzer graduat- ed from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994, and from the Univer- sity of Southern Indiana in 1990. The winners in the Haub- stadt Sommer fest Baby Con- test sponsored by the Gibson County Right to Life were Alissa Rae Luigs, Taylor Ni- cole Dunlap and Jaelyn Lee Wilson. The first place win- ner of the $100 U.S. Savings Bond was Jaelyn Lee Wilson of Haubstadt. Jaelyn is the 11 month old daughter of Rob and Karen Wilson. Sec- ond place, a $50 U.S. Savings Bond, was awarded to Alis- sa Rae Luigs of Haubstadt. Alissa is the five month old daughter of David and Daw- na Luigs. The $25 cash third place was awarded to Taylor Nicole Dunlap. Taylor is the three month old daughter of Terr y and Angie Dunlap of Newburgh. Deborah Langerman will present Once Upon a Time... Once Upon a Mime on July 9 at 10 a.m. at Freedom Hall in For t Branch and at 1 p.m. in the Owensville Community Center. Ever yone is invit- ed to attend. Mime per for- mances are for all ages and include lots of audience par- ticipation as members are guided through some of the basics of technique. Debo- rah will then use those tech- niques in silent per formance pieces. Their per formance is 45 minutes in length. Deb- orah has nearly 25 years of per forming for and teaching mime to people of all ages. She has toured throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. She now resides in Indianapolis with her husband and young son.
