The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, June 8, 2022 D-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg April 20, 1999 is another date which lives in infamy. On that date, two high school seniors walked into their high school in Columbine, Colorado and killed 13 people and wounded 24. A fter shooting their victims, they commit- ted suicide. At the time, this was the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. Since that time, mass shootings of school children continue unabated. Shootings in San- dy Hook CT, Parkland FL, and Virginia Tech have eclipsed the Columbine death toll. Now Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, T X is add- ed to the list. The perpetrator was an 18 -year- old male who entered an elementary school. As of this writing, 19 students and 2 teachers were killed and 18 wounded. Police killed the gunman in a shootout. A recent Washington Post article states that "since Columbine, 311,000 students have ex- perienced gun violence at schools." "At least 185 children, educators and other people have been killed in assaults, and another 369 have been injured." Shocking! Anyone with a shred of human decency is outraged at learning of these senseless shoot- ings. A fter every shooting come the politici- zation of the tragedy. Plenty of finger point- ing who or what is to blame. The Mayor of Zi- onsville posted a profanity laced social-media post in response to the shooting citing guns are the problem. The IndyStar says the 19 children and two teachers who died "are sacrifices to Ameri- ca's gun ownership dogma." Red states are to blame because they "treat gun ownership as an entitlement." President Biden said assault I was wrong with my account of the school shooting when I said the shooter was using an automatic weapon and the truth is it was a semi-automatic rifle. Think what you must, but if our laws that are in place would always be adhered to perhaps there might have been a different result, I don't know and neither does anyone else. If there isn't laws concerning the sale of assault rifles perhaps there should be. The great kidney stone adventure seems to be over for now but my last CAT scan showed two more in my kidneys. Hopefully they re- main small enough not to produce so much pain. At each ER I was in I was administered morphine and both times I had lots of trouble with my stomach. I could never get hooked on it because, even though it does its job and gets rid of the pain for awhile it is still nasty stuff. I definetly feel for our wives when they go through childbirth because passing a kid- ney stone is supposed to be a mild pain simil- iar to their contractions. I have been able to exercise a couple of times now since the stone passing. It felt good to be able to use my dumbells and take a walk. On one day our granddaughter and grandma walked a lap around the circle in our neighbor- hood. The loop in our neighborhood is used by many people as a walking and jogging path. We measured the distance around this circle and my odometer showed just a wee bit less than This was the question Philip asked of the Ethiopian prince as he sat reading from Isa- iah's prophecy (Acts 8:30), and it is a question which we should continually keep asking our- selves as we read the holy Scriptures. There are always those among God's people who do not much care whether or not they un- derstand what they read if only it warms their hearts! To them the Bible is little more than a fetish. Taking only those Scriptures which ap- peal to them, and leaving the rest, they actu- ally feel themselves quite spiritual and often talk about believing the Bible whether or not they understand it! But such "spirituality" is far from genuine, and such "faith" is blind and superstitious at best. While it is true that the Bible teaches ma- ny truths which we believe, although they are beyond our comprehension (such as its open- ing verse!), yet how can we believe what the Bible says unless we understand what it says? God would have us understand what we read and believe it intelligently. Indeed, true faith will want to know and un- derstand more and more of God's Word.
