Gibson Southern had led the game since leadoff hitter Long started it with a walk in the first. Lauryn Adamson singled and Blume's double brought Long home for a 1- 0 lead. Then in the fourth inning Emma Lee Higgs led off with a walk for the Titans. Tucker singled. With one out Long singled to drive in Higgs and Tucker scored on an error for a 3-0 lead. Dickerson gave up five hits, five walks while striking out two and allowing two runs. TWO Continued from page 1 Princeton batter to strike out the side to keep the score at 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Okes hammered a one-out line drive single to left field, but he was the only Titan to get on base in the inning. The next two Gibson South- ern hitters made contact with the ball, but the Tiger field- ers made plays on the ball to end the inning. Malone struck out the first two Tigers he faced in the top of the seventh inning, and he got the third Princeton bat- ter to pop up to short to end the inning, with the hosts still trailing by the narrow 3-2 margin. Wilhite struck out the first Gibson Southern batter to open the bottom half of the seventh inning, but Yancey nailed a line-drive single to left field to put a runner on first for the Titans with one out. Malone followed Yancey to the plate, and the senior cen- terfielder immediately hit a line-drive single to center to give the hosts "new life" with runners on first and second and still just one out. Hurless was the next bat- ter up for Gibson South- ern, but the Titan shortstop struck out for the second out of the inning. That brought Hamilton to the plate for the hosts, and once again, though Hamilton made good contact with the baseball, the ball was fielded by the Princeton shortstop, who fired the ball to first for the final out of the game. "It was a tough loss for us," admitted May, "As I said, we hit the ball, but it seemed as if they got a glove on about everything we hit. "We only left three run- ners on base; our pitching was excellent; and we made just one error; but in the end, Princeton got the win. It was just a tough loss for us." The Titans had seven hits in the encounter, with Okes going three-for-three and Malone getting a pair of sin- gles in four at-bats, while Farmer and Yancey each had a hit for Gibson Southern. Now 7-2 on the year, and 2-2 in PAC outings, Gibson Southern was scheduled to play Barr Reeve at Gibson Southern last night, and this evening (Tuesday), the Ti- tans are scheduled to play North Posey in Poseyville in an important conference bat- tle with the Vikings at 6 p.m. Titans baseball falls to South Spencer 4-2 By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com South Spencer scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning here Tues- day afternoon, and that's all the host Rebels needed to put the first loss of the season on visiting Gibson Southern by a final 4-2 margin in Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) base- ball action. The loss dropped Gibson Southern to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play on the 2022 diamond season. The Titans went down in order in the top half of the first inning of the game, but the Rebels did all the damage they needed in their half of the first frame. South Spencer's Jalen John- son opened the bottom of the first inning with a single, but senior Colton Okes, who pitched a complete game for the Titans and struck out 10 Rebels in the process, struck out the next two South Spen- cer batters. That brought Adam Tingle to the plate for the eventual winners, and Tingle reached on an error to score Johnson ( Johnson reached second on a steal, then went to third on a passed ball), to give the Reb- els a 1-0 lead. Nathan Hurt was the next South Spencer hitter, and he smacked a double to right field to score Tingle to up the hosts' advantage to 2-0, with still two outs and a runner on second. Trey Mattingly then drilled a double to left field to score Hurt and put South Spencer up 3-0. Houston Compton then lined out to senior Brayden Malone in center field to end the inning, but not before South Spencer had scored three unearned runs, which in the end, the Titans could not overcome. Neither team managed a run in the second or third inning, but in the top of the fourth, senior Kaden Hurless opened the frame by reaching first base on an error. That brought Oliver Hamil- ton to the plate, and Hamilton immediately pounded a dou- ble to left field to score Hur- less to make the score 3-1. Senior Levi Dickerson stepped to the plate next, and the hard-hitting Titan drilled a line-drive double to left to score Garrett Reid (who re- placed Hamilton as a courtesy runner) to edge Gibson South- ern to within 3-2, with no outs. Senior Logan Maurer put good wood on the baseball and sent it to left field, where the Rebel left fielder made an er- ror to send Dickerson to third base, while Maurer took sec- ond. That gave Gibson Southern runners at second and third with no outs. A fter a strikeout and a ground ball back to the pitch- er, the Titans still had runners on second and third, but now with two outs. Senior Noah Bryant worked the South Spencer pitcher for a walk to load the bases for Malone. Malone hit a hard line drive to left field, but the ball was caught by the Rebel outfield- er to end the inning for Gib- son Southern. The Titans held the Reb- els scoreless in the bottom of the fourth frame, and neither team could plate a run in the fifth inning keeping the score at 3-2, with South Spencer clinging to the narrow one- run lead after five full innings. Gibson Southern again failed to put a run across in the top of the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the sixth, South Spencer scored another unearned run to take a 4-2 ad- vantage over the Titans. In the top of the seventh, Bryant opened the inning with an infield single to the left side of the diamond. That brought Malone to the plate for the Titans, and though he made contact with the ball, Malone hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Bry- ant out at second. A fter a strikeout, Hurless was hit by a pitch to give the Titans runners on first and second, but a called third strike on the next Titan bat- ter ended the game and their unbeaten season, with Gibson Southern trailing 4-2. Okes gave up just three hits in the game, the same number as the Rebel mound staff, and the Titan senior walked just one South Spencer batter, while striking out 10 in a los- ing effort. The Titans left eight run- ners on base, while the Rebels left just two runners on base in the contest. Both teams managed just three hits in the fray, with Hamilton and Dickerson knocking out a double each, while Bryant connected for a single for Gibson Southern. Bryant and Dickerson both worked the Rebel pitcher for a walk, and Hurless was hit by a pitch. Hurt and Mattingly both doubled for South Spencer, and Johnson had a single for the winners. "It was a very tough loss for us," said Titan Coach Chris May after the game, "We have been hitting the ball very well, and we really did hit the ball again this evening. We just hit it at people who were in the right place to field or catch the baseball. "It was a great game to watch from a spectator point of view, as every pitch and nearly every play had tension and importance. We just came out on the losing side of a very exciting baseball game." The win gave South Spen- cer a 5 -3 overall record, but more importantly, it kept the Rebels' conference record per- fect at 3-0. Gibson Southern hosted PAC and county rival Prince- ton on Friday at Gibson South- ern, and on Monday, the Ti- tans were scheduled to play Barr Reeve at Gibson South- ern last evening. This evening, the Titans are scheduled to travel to North Posey for a conference game at 6 p.m. Lady Titans roll over Raiders in no-hitter By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern rolled over Southridge last Tuesday as Alexis Tucker and Callie Dick- erson combined for a no-hit- ter and the Titan batters pro- duced nine runs. Tucker struck out 11 through five innings, allowing more than three batters only in the first and fifth innings. She started by walking two of the first three batters, but then struck out the next two in a combined seven pitches. Callie Dickerson took over in the sixth inning and pitched to only seven batters, while striking out three. The only base runner reached on an error. She struck out the next batter then got a grounder back to the mound for the last out. "Alexis and Callie both did a real nice job pitching the last two ballgames. They both pitched ahead in the count a high percentage of the time. That's extremely important, regardless of who your op- ponent is," said Titan Coach Gary May. On the offensive side, the Titans got on the scoreboard immediately as Sydney Long led off with a walk and stole second base. Lauryn Adam- son then ripped a single to center field to score Long. Adamson stole second and third base. Blume walked and stole second. Money walked and rounded first base and then got caught in a run- down between first and sec- ond which allowed Adamson to score. "It's a called play we have worked on. We are two- for-two this year with that play," said Coach May. In the second inning Tuck- er led off with a single and Ry- ann Smith followed with a sin- gle on a 3-1 pitch. Long then singled to drive both Long and Smith home for a 4-0 lead. They added two more in the fifth inning. Olivia Money led off with a walk. Ally Malone hit a sacrifice fly to center field moving Money to second. Tay- lor Fonte hit a drive to center field to bring Money home. Two batters later, Tucker hit a single to drive Fonte home for a 6 -0 lead. Adamson walked to start the sixth inning. Breena Blume pounded a triple to right field, driving in Ad - amson. Money then hit a fly to right field that was deep enough to score Blume from third and the Lady Titans were up 8 -0. Their final run was scored by Tucker, who reached on a fielder's choice for the first out. She advanced to third base when Smith reached on an error, and scored on a sacri- fice fly to center field by Long. The win improved Gibson Southern's record to 8 -3 and 2-1 in the conference. Southridge is 1-3. Above: Olivia Money hits a grounder up the right side during the Ti- tans 5-4 win over Heri- tage Hills. Right: Ryann Smith makes a leaping catch of a line drive.
