Titans drop to Princeton 3-2 By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com A fter winning their first sev- en games of the season, the Gib- son Southern Titans dropped their second game in four days here Fri- day evening, falling to county ri- val Princeton 3-2 in Pocket Athlet- ic Conference (PAC) play. The loss was another tough one for the Titans, as the hosts out-hit the Tigers 7-6, and senior pitch- ers Oliver Hamilton and Brayden Malone struck out 14 Princeton batters (seven each), while the Ti- gers were able to send just four Ti- tans back to the dugout on strike- outs. "We hit the baseball, but for the second game in a row, we just hit the ball where fielders had the op- portunity to make plays," said Ti- tan Coach Chris May. Neither scored in the first two innings of the conference contest, but in the top of the third frame, the Tigers pushed a run across the plate to take a 1-0 lead. Malone hit a line drive single to center to open the Titan half of the third inning to give the hosts a run- ner on first with no outs. Senior Kaden Hurless followed Malone to the plate, and after a steal by Malone, Hurless hit a hard ground ball to third, which the Ti- ger third baseman fielded and fired to first for the first out of the in- ning, with Malone taking third on the play. That brought up Hamilton for Gibson Southern, with Malone on third and one out. Hamilton hit a fly ball that was caught, but the speedy Malone tagged and raced home to tie the score at 1-1. Senior Levi Dickerson followed Hamilton, and though Dickerson made solid contact, but his deep fly ball to right field was caught to end the inning. In the top of the fourth, the Ti- gers plated two more runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Princeton changed pitchers to start the bottom of the fourth in- ning, with Ryne Wilhite replacing Mater Cowan on the mound. Gibson Southern senior Colton Okes greeted Wilhite with a single to left, and Okes moved to second base on an error by Wilhite to put a runner on second with no outs for the Titans. Logan Maurer was at the plate for the hosts, and the senior hit a hard smash to short, and the Tiger shortstop erred on the play to send Okes home for the Titans second run of the game to edge the hosts to within a run at 3-2. With Maurer on first and no outs, senior Regan Farmer laid down a perfect bunt to move Maurer to sec- ond on the sacrifice. That gave the Titans a runner in scoring position, with one out. Senior Garrett Reid followed Farmer to the plate, and Reid hit a sharp ground ball back to Wil- hite, who fielded the ball and fired to first to get the second out of the inning—but not before Maurer raced to third. With the tying run on third and two outs, senior Mason Yancey stepped into the batter's box, but Yancey was fooled on a two-strike pitch and took a called third strike to end the inning. Malone relieved Hamilton on the mound in the top of the fifth, and Malone struck out the first Tiger, then gave up a single before strik- ing out the next Tiger, before the fourth batter of the inning hit a soft fly ball to left for the final out. In the bottom of the fifth, the Ti- tans were out in order, and score re- mained 3-2, in favor of Princeton. Malone struck out the first two Tiger batters in the top of the sixth frame, and after the third hitter sin- gled, Malone struck out the fourth LADY TITANS BEAT PATRIOTS, COLONELS SATURDAY By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com The Lady Titans softball team used timely hitting, a great defen- sive play and solid pitching to beat Heritage Hills 5 -4 at home Saturday morning. They then traveled to Hen- derson, Kentucky to win 3-2 Satur- day night agasinst the previously 14- 0 Colonels. Alexis Tucker bashed 2-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field to lead off the bottom of the sixth in- ning and give the Titans a 3-2 lead. Two batters later Sydney Long hit her second homer of the season for an insurance run, they would need to hang on. "Both were bombs and left no doubt," said Coach Gary May. Heritage Hills scored one run to tie the game and advance a runner to third base before Tucker shut them down with two strikeouts to end the game in the seventh inning. Gibson Southern scored early as Brenna Blume walked with two outs in the first inning. Olivian Money got a single and Ally Malone had a two- run double. The Titans added a third run in the third inning as Malone left off with a double. Tucker then brought her home with a two-out single mak- ing it a 3-0 game. Heritage Hills scored one in fourth, but a beautiful defensive play by Ryann Smith saved the day for the Titans. Playing deep at second base she made a leaping grab of a line drive that was headed for the right field corner and would have scored at least two run, instead it ended the inning. Heritage Hills scored two more in the fifth inning to tie the game at three before Tucker and Long's homeruns put the Titan in the lead for good. Tucker got the win for the Titans on the mound picthing seven in- nings, giving up seven hits, striking out 8 and allowing one earned run. In an unusual home and away dou- ble header the Titans hung on a for 3-2 win over Henderson with some nailbiting as Henderson rallied for two runs with two outs in the bottom of seventh inning before Callie Dick- erson got a popout to catcher Bren- na Blume to end the game with run- ners on base. "It was a big win against a quali- ty team," said Coach May. Hender- son has beaten Castle, North Posey and Tecumseh on the way to a 14- 0 record. "I thought our chances of winning that game after playing in the morn- ing and having to travel down there were pretty slim.
