Fisher marker dedicated A public dedication ceremo- ny for an Indiana state histor- ical marker commemorating decorated World War I sol- dier Aaron Richard Fisher is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2022. The program will be- gin at 1 pm CST at the Lyles Station Historic School and Museum at 953 County Rd 500 W, Princeton, IN 47670. Parking is available on site. The text follows for the state marker entitled "Aaron Richard Fisher": Decorated soldier Aaron Fisher was born at Lyles Sta- tion and joined the U.S. Army at age 15. He was assigned to the 9th Cavalry and later the 24th Infantry, both histor- ic Buffalo Soldier units, and served in the Southwest and in the Mexican Expedition pur- suing Pancho Villa. Appoint- ed 2nd Lieutenant in 1918, he fought in France during W WI with the all-Black 92nd Division. In 1918, Fisher was wounded while successful- ly defending his command against German troops at Lesseux and received a Dis- tinguished Service Cross and Croix de Guerre. He con- tinued in the Army postwar and taught ROTC cadets at Wilberforce University from 1936 -1947, influencing a gen- eration of Black soldiers. He retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1965. The public is invited to at- tend the dedication of this state marker that commem- orates the contributions of Black soldiers during World War I, at a time when Jim Crow laws codified segrega- tion and discrimination in the United States and made it dif- ficult for A frican Americans to hold leadership positions. This is the fifth state histor- ical marker to be installed in Gibson County. For informa- tion on other state markers in the county, see: https://www. in.gov/history/state-histor- ical-markers/find-a-mark- er/find-historical-mark- ers-by-county/indiana-histor- ical-markers-by-county/#gib- son. State historical markers commemorate significant in- dividuals, organizations, plac- es, and events in Indiana his- tory. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For over 100 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, a division of the Indiana State Library, has been marking In- diana history. Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold letter- ing and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. Over 700 of these markers have been in- stalled over the years. For more information about the Indiana Historical Marker Program, including details on this marker, a listing of other markers in the state, or other resources about Indiana, vis- it the Indiana Historical Bu- reau's website at http://www. IN.gov/history or call (317) 232-2535. For more informa- tion about the marker dedica- tion ceremony, please contact Eric Heidenreich, Executive Director of the Gibson Coun- ty Visitors & Tourism Bureau at eric@gibsoncountyin.org. Sheriff's Office gets body cam grant The Gibson County Sher- iff's Office has been awarded a grant in the amount of $7,600 to update and replace deputy body cameras. Captain Deb- orah Borchelt applied for and completed the competitive grant application, which will fund $400 per body camera, with a 25 percent match re- quirement from the Sheriff's Office. The competitive grant is awarded by the Indiana De- partment of Homeland Secu- rity and will require program and fiscal reports to be filed to ensure accurate spend- ing of the grant funds. This grant will enable the Sher- iff's Office to continue to re- place older or outdated body camera units and purchase new ones. The Gibson Coun- ty Sheriff's Office has utilized body cameras for patrol dep- uties since 2014. The Gibson County Sheriff's Office has embraced this technology as it provides transparency, re- cords valuable evidence, and shows the events as they oc- curred from the deputy's per- spective. Man who confessed to molestation sentenced Patrick Smithhart, 36, plead guilty on April 20 to one count of child molesta- tion. Smithhart told the court between 2012 and 2014 he sex- ually molested a victim who was under the age of 14 years old at the time. Smithhart was sentenced to 22 years in the Indiana Department of Cor- rections by Judge Jeffrey Me- ade with all that time execut- ed. Smithhart shall have to register as a convicted sex of- fender for the rest of his life. "This sentence is appro- priate in that it provides the victim with some justice al- though there is nothing that can truly make the victim whole. As I have stated before, I am in awe of our young vic- tims who come forward to pro- tect others from the same fate and stand before their abuser and speak the truth. I would like to thank Detective Roger Ballard and the Gibson Coun- ty Sheriff's Office for their ef- forts in vigorously pursuing justice on behalf of the vic- tim," said Gibson County Prosecutor Michael Cochren.
