Recently I enjoyed lunch with an ex- ecutive in a Fortune 50 insurance company who moved a few months prior. Her 10 year old son came with her. Previously they lived in Phoenix where it rarely rains and so the little guy was accustomed to such weather. They fi nished shopping one day and came outside where they discovered it was raining. The executive went back in with her son and bought them both an umbrella. She opened it, handed it to him, and said, "Let's run for it!" and with that she took off for their car. She unlocked the doors, put her bags in the backseat, closed her umbrella and jumped in. She looked up to discover her son standing outside, beside his door, in the rain. "Get in," she said. "I don't know how to close the umbrella," he said. The next time you assume others know how to do what you know how to do, think again…from their perspective. Then Work Positive and Live Positive as you listen to life. Do April Showers Bring Umbrellas? (Part 2 of the "I Can" series) Have you ever had to stand up to a person that was trying to coerce you into doing something that you knew wouldn't be beneficial for you? They kept harass- ing you about it, and tried to manipulate you into sub- mitting to their suggestion. Every time you saw them, you would go in another direction in order to avoid the confrontation. Maybe fear, or even the discom- fort of dealing with an in- timidating person, hindered you from confronting them. Eventually, you mustered up enough courage to stand up to the bully, because you knew that if you submitted to their suggestion, it would lead you down a wrong path. Although standing up to a difficult person takes courage, I believe standing up to the internal bully takes even more courage. My Roommate How many times have we talked ourselves out of doing something that would benefit us like eating health- ier, managing money better, or forgiving an offense? We listened to the self-sabotag- ing thoughts that beat us down with fear, doubt, or pride. It's tough to deal with the inner enemy, because we are roommates. When it comes to dealing with chal- lenging people, most of the time we can leave them. We can get a new job, change communities, or love people from a distance. Unfortu- nately, we can't hide from ourselves. However, we can do something about the negative self-talk filled with insecurities, worry, and pes- simism that strive to reign in our lives. We can con- front ourselves with cour- age, by using the spiritual principle the bible calls, "casting down thoughts". 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (GNT) says, "The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons but God's powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strong- holds. We destroy false arguments; we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowl- edge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey Christ." In other words, when thoughts come that don't align with God's word, we must shout, "NO!" to them, declare God's word to replace the thought, and then walk in obedience to the scripture. Also, the more we meditate on the word of God, the more we will be led by the Spirit. I Corinthians 2:16 (AMP) states, "For who has known the mind and purposes of the Lord, so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purposes]." PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Father you alone are worthy of all the praise, honor, and glory. There is none like you in all the earth. Thank you for creat- ing me in your image and after your likeness. Forgive me for believing and accept- ing thoughts that disagree with scripture and torment my mind. Lord, I need help in keeping my thoughts in alignment with your word. I ask that you give me the strength to conquer my in- ternal bully, so that I may please you and live victori- ously in every area of my life. In Jesus name I pray - Amen."
