Poplar Street, Petersburg See SUPER SIX on 2 See CLOSE LOSS on page 6 Chargers basketball loses close game to the Titans By Matthew Haycraft The Chargers boys' basketball team faced off with Gibson South- ern on Wednesday, December 29, suffering two losses. The Charger varsity boys' team started off their fight strong by scor- ing one more than the Gibson South- ern Titans in the first quarter of the game. However, in the second quar- ter, the Ti- tans seemed to overpow- er the Char- gers in scor- ing, leav- ing them at a 10 -point deficit by halftime, with the score at 35 -25. A fter halftime, the Chargers came out with a vengeance and battled their way up in points, holding the Titans to only eight points for the quarter. The Chargers were able to sink in four three-pointers and two two-pointers for the quarter, with Quade Morton scoring the bulk of the points. This left the Chargers at a score of 43-41 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The win was well within their grasp with only being three points away, but a lot can hap- pen in a quarter and it did. The Char- gers hit the court and put up a good fight, with the score going back and forth throughout the quarter. Howev- er, the Chargers were unable to land those winning points over the Titans, and ended up losing by a score of 54- 50. The Chargers were led in scoring by Morton with 22 points. Following him was Kendric Sorgius with 12, Al- ex Clark with eight, Chase Ridao and Julian Gish both with three points each, and Braden Howald with two points. JUNIOR VARSITY Pike Central's junior varsity boys also played Gibson Southern on Wednesday, losing 55 -28. The Charger junior varsity seemed to start out slow through the first quarter of the game, on- ly landing six points for the quar- ter. By the end of the first half of the game, the JV Chargers were falling in points, with the score 25 -16. The Titans came out in the second half of the game more aggressive than in the first half, and the Chargers could not pull together the points and re- bounds to make some headway on them. The JV team only managed to pull together 12 points in the sec- ond half of the game, whereas the Ti- tans overpowered them in points and rebounds, scoring 30 points for the half, handing the Chargers the loss. Leading in scoring for the JV was Chase Ridao with nine points. Fol- lowing him was Brenton Fryrear with eight, Jagar Dent with five, and Albert Whitehead, Noah Meece and Zane Gehlhausen with two points each.
