Poplar Street, Petersburg "I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved" (II Cor. 12:15). The true man of God will faithfully serve the congregation which the Lord has entrust- ed to him without thought of reward. Like Paul, he will "gladly spend and be spent" for them even if his toil and sacrifice go unappreciated. Where the congregation is too small to support him fully he will cheerfully engage in enough secular work to supply the deficiency. This is as it should be for, in ministering to his peo- ple, he is serving God. But there is another side to this coin, for Christian assemblies should appreciate the ministries of their pastors in their behalf. This is especially so where the minister gives him- self unstintingly for his flock. It is a sad fact that too many pastors are grossly underpaid. Most of the members of the congregation would not be willing to live on the low economic level on which they keep their pastor and his family living for years on end. He must be willing to sacrifice, but they must not be deprived of any of the luxuries to which they are accustomed. Stam It was in 1976 I started writing Religious View- point and have not missed a week in 45 years. We have written over 2,300 columns and more than 100 newspapers have carried its column. Since 1976 our world has changed. I would never believe our beloved America would be- come a socialist nation. Our educational sys- tem has changed drastically. Today same-sex marriage is accepted by many and gays are in the open. Sex trafficking is a billion dollar a year business. The open borders are sending thousands of girls into sex slavery where they will only live about seven years. My heart is saddened as I see the demise of America. Our values are vanishing and morality has slipped away. In our universities, most faculty members are anti-God and liberal socialists. Our young people leave home with faith and return home and don't believe in God. In the Church during these 45 years, I have seen a great falling away from the Bible and true Christianity. I have spent more than 100 days in Russia. I have seen the poverty and an- ti-God teaching that Rus- sian socialism has had on their people. The social- ists said that religion is the opiate of the people. The socialism in Ameri- ca is one of the most de- structive ideologies ever to affect our beloved America. Even in the religious world, men like Bill Hy- bels, Jimmy Swaggart and others have brought shame to the Church. I hope this last Religious Viewpoint will awak- en Christians to what is happening in America. There is still hope in Jesus Christ. The wonder- ful Gospel has not changed. I urge you again to read the all-time favorite verse, John 3:16. Another week is past and it seems as though we are still talking about the same things as we did a year ago. There are different players in the game though and the same complainers are complaining. I'm starting to wonder if our lots in life are really ever going to change. Life is sometimes hard but we should strive to not turn into cynical miserable people. This is a new year and we should look forward to see if perhaps we might make a difference. The big thing I was taught in the Marine Corps was if you complain then offer a solution to what you are complaining about. I think I'll just try to be a better person in this New Year and see if I can help others along this path of life. Now that I have stood on my soap box let us move on with the Ramblings. Last Monday I was fortunate enough to be able to help my friend install a toilet in a lady's bathroom. This toilet was not only installed by my friend but he bought and paid for this fixture out of his own funds. He would never tell anyone about this but I'll mention it for him. There are people in this world that just see a need and do something about it without any thought of gain. I was happy to be able to even be a little part of this adventure. Jesus had the most all en- compassing mind this world has ever seen. His convictions were so strong so unswerv- ing that He was not afraid to mingle with any group, se- cure in the knowledge that He would not be contaminat- ed or swayed. Fear makes us unwilling to give voice to our convictions or to listen to those of others, who fear of rejection, fear our beliefs will be attacked, fear our faith might be shaken. But if that is the case, perhaps we need to examine just how deep our convictions really are. Jesus had no such fear, no need to fence Himself off from others for His own protection. He knew the difference be- tween graciousness and com- promise and we would do well to follow His example. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services.
