B-6 Wednesday, October 27, 2021 The Press-Dispatch ELLIOTT Continued from page 1 suit for the 1.2-mile lap. Then the triathlon moved on to a 56 mile out-and-back bike ride on closed state highways and country roads through rural Delaware and Henry coun- ties. The course hovered at ap- proximately 1,000 feet above sea level, with less than a cou- ple hundred feet of elevation change. Light winds were ex- pected, but not rain, which is what happened for a ma- jority of the ride, according to Elliott. A fter the ride, the race moved on to a competi- tive 13.1-mile run around the south side of the Prairie Creek Reservoir. The course contin- ued over rolling hills that chal- lenged the athletes before fin- ishing back at the reservoir. Elliott competed in the tri- athlon's male 30 -34 division, with 78 other participants, placing 60th out of 79, plac- ing 364 in the gender rank out of 551, and ending with an overall rank of 490. In the swim portion of the competi- tion, he swam the 1.2 miles in 44:31. He then went straight into the 56 -mile bike race and finished that in 3:27:36. In the 13.1-mile run, he finished in 2:11:12, making his overall time for the triathlon 6:44:20. Elliott said "It was definite- ly a big learning experience. It was the first triathlon that I have ever done. Learning the transitions, what to do, and how much time it was go- ing to take. It was a lot of fun. Definitely a challenge, but it is something that I am look- ing forward to doing again." He said he was going to compete in the 2020 Iron- man, and he did all the train- ing and preparation for the race, but it was canceled due to COVID. So he ended up doing the same thing around here, riding his bike and run- ning, and decided to just keep training and preparing for the next year's race. As far as his training, Elliott said that he was on a 20 -week program, even though he trained year round for this. The program was to prepare him more for the race right be- fore the start. "I was biking and running six days a week. It gradual- ly got more intense, so it was some pretty long weekends. I would have a 50 -mile ride on a Saturday, followed by a cou- ple-mile run off that ride, and then on Sunday, I would have a 10 - to 12-mile run. So the weekends were pretty long, and then through the week, I would have 5 - and 6 -mile runs, a 20 -mile bike to an hour, hour-half bike, something like that. It built up quite a bit the closer it got to the race," stat- ed Elliott. "I was a lot more confident this year, because I thought that I trained better this year. I swam in open water quite a bit, which was new to me. So getting that to were I was com- fortable with it. Then the run, I did a couple of marathons and some of that, so I was pret- ty comfortable there. The bike I felt pretty good about it and then it rained the day of the race through about two-thirds of it, so that slowed me down quite a bit, so my time was not quite as fast as I would have liked it to have been." "This one just being my first time was such a big learn- ing curve. Like the positions and what to expect getting out of the water and getting to the bike, and getting ready to go and then the bike to the run. I was a little over 20 min- utes put together on my tran- sitions and I can really cut the down quite a bit. Like I said, the bike, it rained for the ma- jority of it so that slowed me down, but just putting in some miles and being prepared for the rain. I feel like this year was a lot of, I just want to com- plete it and learn and see what it is. I plan on doing the same at Muncie next year. I feel like if I am going to go race at Muncie next year, I should be able to cut a lot of time off it hopefully." Elliot commented that he would like to do other rac- es and triathlons as well, he just wants to do this one again, more or less, because he is more familiar with it, the course and area, so he knows a little more what to expect here. One day, he said he would like to tackle the full Ironman, but is want- ing to lead up to that. Howev- er, there are some half-mara- thons and marathons that he would like to do leading up to the next Ironman. Wrapping up his experi- ence, Elliott stated, "It was just a different challenge for me, not being necessarily in the realm (of marathons). You know, I have been play- ing basketball my whole life, so (I wanted to) challenge myself to do something dif- ferent and learn. To show my three little kids that you can do anything that you put your mind to, you just have to put the hard work in. I really en- joyed it and I look forward to doing more of them. Thanks to my wife for letting me put the time in to train." NEWS! Want to share your news with others?
