The 2021 Little Miss Liver Mush Pageant, another part of the festival, is canceled. According to Director, Emily Epley, The Liver Mush Festival is being "reimagined" for 2021 due to the recent increases in COVID-Delta cases in local and regional areas that the festival's 16,000+ attendees visit from. Epley stated "As we were preparing for a return to our "normal" festival, increases in COVID-Delta cases caused us to assess if that would still be the appropriate path forward. After regular communication with Cleveland County Public Health leadership and guidance based on county and state data along with discussions with our Tourism Advisory Council and festival partners, this decision was made with the priority being the health and safety of our guests, our community members, volunteers and staff. The festival, an annual mainstay in Shelby, NC for 30+ years, generates interest near and far from those who enjoy the festival's namesake– Liver Mush. Each year visitors enjoy live music throughout the event, entertainment and activities for pets and their people, presented by Rollover Pets and a wide variety of food, art, handcrafted items and non-profi t and business vendors. The 2019 festival, held in Uptown Shelby, drew approximately 16,000 attendees, with half coming from further than 50 miles away. In 2020, the festival was canceled due to COVID. It was the fi rst time in 30+ years. It was in 2021 that a very popular new Liver Mush Festival event was born, The Liver Mush Cooking Video Contest. It was so well received that it was decided it would be a regular part of the festival going forward and will continue this year. "As we work with festival partners to reimagine the 2021 festival, we are exploring what can be presented in an engaging and safe way through online channels. This includes the Liver Mush Cooking Video Contest, a Virtual Marketplace showcasing arts/crafts vendors and, a Virtual Pet Costume Contest offered by RollOver Pets.
