B-8 Wednesday, June 30, 2021 The Press-Dispatch CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg It is strange but true that most people — even the great majority of religious people — do not know what a church is. Ask the average man what a church is, and he's apt to reply: "Well, anybody knows that! A church is a building where peo- ple go to worship God." But this is not correct. The word translated church, in our Bibles, simply means assembly. A church is not a building, but the assembly that meets in the building. Techni- cally, a church is not even a religious gathering, for the same word is used in Acts 19:32 of a riot- ous mob which had assembled at Ephesus, and this verse says that this assembly was confused and that "the greater part knew not wherefore they were come together." Perhaps this could Religion is very important to millions of young people returning to public schools af- ter the pandemic. Many will get mixed messag- es about religion from teachers who have a hos- tile attitude toward religion. There are many scare tactics used by teachers, school adminis- trators and the media. The teachers' unions are one of the greatest enemies of free speech and religious liberty. Many will be taught philoso- phies that contradict what their parents have taught them. Parents should be involved and know what is being taught in school. Most young people in America have a de- sire to learn more about God. More than half of all teenagers attend church related activi- ties on a regular basis. Nine out of every ten young people say they developed meaningful relationships at church. Almost the same per- centage developed a deeper relationship with Christ by attending church. Since religion is so important to young people, no teacher should be hostile toward religion. Christian- ity should be accommo- dated within the bound- aries of the Constitution. The Constitution allows students to pray individ- ually or in groups and to discuss religion. This in- cludes the history of reli- gion and the Bible as lit- erature. Student expres- sion of religious beliefs through sports, artwork and homework are constitutionally protected. Religious clubs have the same right to meet and have announcements in campus publications. Students are allowed to wear a cross or shirt that has a religious symbol. The ACLU is the most dangerous organization in America and silently walks the halls of our schools attack- ing our religious freedoms. Minutes with the Bible By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Well hello there folks, how you doing this week? We had a vacation last week and it was good to get away from here for awhile. If you ha- ven't left your troubles and cares to sit for a spell and get a fresh look at them. Take a day or two to let your mind find some rest. It helps to just to do something different for awhile. We drove to Branson, Missouri last Sunday and stayed for four good days. We saw and did some great things. Monday we started out going to Tanger Outlet Mall, but we also went there an- other day too. They had a few bargains but they also several items which were expensive enough you had to want them to pay the price. Our wives really liked the Vera Bradley store because they had 80 % off on lots of their purses. I think my wife already has a couple of totes full of them now. If you haven't experienced Branson's old town you should. They have lots of stores which used to be in almost every town such as their 5 & 10 cent store. If you can't find what you are looking for in this store then it might not exist. We saw "The Petersen Family" bluegrass show on Tuesday afternoon at the Little Opry. This show was really a great show. I mentioned to my wife about two songs I hoped to hear and both of them were in their program. If you get to Bran- son please see the Petersens because they are not only a group of great performers but they are genuine good people who are very friendly and approachable. You would never realize their po- tential fame and standing in the bluegrass world. My cousin D.K. Brewster and his family live in Branson, so we had a meal with them and en- joyed a good visit. His wife is busy as she works two jobs and hosts a radio program as well. She has to help D.K, because he is old enough now Upcoming Events Upcoming gospel concert July 31 There will be an upcoming gospel concert in Peters- burg at God's House at 402 E. Illinois Street on Saturday, July 31 at 7 p.m. EDT. Featured are The White River Quar- tet, Brian Free and Assurance, and the LeFevre Quartet. There will be a freewill offering taken up. CHURCH Corner of Center and Sycamore Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; Wednesday Bible study 6:30 p.m. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut-ins and our lost loved ones. Four Fundamental Elements of Prayer 1. P—Praise the Lord. The Psalmist said, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him" (Psalm 100 :4). 2. R—Repent of your sins. Paul tell us, "The Spirit helps us in our weakness...he who searches our heart...inter- cedes for God's people in ac- cordance with the will of God" (Romans 8:26 -27). 3. A—Ask for yourself and for others. "I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heav- en...whatever doors you open on earth shall be open in heav- en" (Matthew 16:19). 4. Y—Yield to God's will. If you don't know what God's will is, prayer is the starting point. And if you already know and you're not doing it, prayer will convict, correct and chan- nel you in the right direction. "Pray in the Spirit on all occa- sions" (Ephesians 6:18). Dwight Howe, Pastor Karri Brock, Reporter GR ACE G.B. CHURCH 1007 E.
