Star Party at Patoka Lake slated for July 10 Patoka Lake will host its 30th annual Star Party on Sat- urday, July 10, at the Patoka Lake Nature Center and the Patoka Lake Beach. Patoka's interpretive natu- ralist will teach visitors how to make solar bead brace- lets from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Beads will be clear in- side and change colors with the sun when outdoors. Cost is $2 per bracelet kit. The kits include stretchy cord and so- lar, glow-in-the-dark and col- ored beads. In the evening, NASA So- lar System Ambassador Tony Brian and his team of astron- omers will help visitors inter- pret and identify objects in the night sky through telescopes. The entrance fee of $7 per vehicle for Indiana residents and $ 9 for out-of-state visi- tors is required for the New- ton-Stewart State Recreation Area, located north of Wick- liffe on State Road 164. For more information regarding this program or other inter- pretive events, call the Na- ture Center at 812-685 -2447. DNR reporting sick songbirds in Hoosier state The Indiana DNR has re- ceived reports of sick and dy- ing songbirds from 15 coun- ties statewide. As the inves- tigation continues, the DNR recommends all Hoosiers re- move their bird feeders state- wide. The 15 counties are Clark, Delaware, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, LaGrange, Lake, Marion, Monroe, New- ton, St. Joseph, Union, Wash- ington, and Whitley. DNR is working with the In- diana Animal Disease Diag- nostic Laboratory (IN ADDL) and the USGS National Wild- life Health Center to deter- mine the birds' cause of death. The affected songbirds showed neurological signs of illness as well as eye swelling and crusty discharge. Several samples have been sent to IN ADDL. All bird samples submitted have test- ed negative for avian influen- za and West Nile virus. Final laboratory diagnostic results are pending. The following steps are rec- ommended statewide: • Use the DNR sick/dead wildlife reporting tool at on.IN.gov/sickwildlife to alert DNR staff. • Stop feeding birds until the mortality event has con- cluded. • Clean feeders and baths with a 10 % bleach solution. • Avoid handling birds. If you need to handle birds, wear disposable gloves. • When removing dead birds, wear disposable gloves and place birds and gloves in a sealable plastic bag to dispose with household trash. • Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a precaution. Additional information will be shared when final diagnos- tic results are received. Bees take over Terrace entrance Brad Fryrear and his son, Brayden, collect a swarm of bees that recently made their temporary home on the entrance of a Downtown Terrace building in Pe- tersburg. The swarm prevented use of the entrance by build- ing residents. Fryrear, a Hazleton community resident, said he was collecting the bees to add to his hives in his gar- den.
