Bird migration on the Patoka River NWR April Showers bring May flowers, but April also brings many interesting and beau- tiful birds to the Patoka Riv- er National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is considered a mid-migration refuge so that the peak of neotropical spe- cies passing through the Ref- uge will be in April and May. Most are passing through on their way to their nest- ing grounds in Canada. Neo- tropical warblers, vireos, tan- agers, thrushes and many others species can be spot- ted on the Refuge. However, there are several species like the prothonotary warbler and the Baltimore oriole that will make their home on the Ref- uge for the summer. The best time to look for these migrant species is ear- ly in the morning and the best places are wooded areas in proximity to water. On the Refuge, the Snakey Point area provides the per- fect habitat. Several trails, including the Boyd, Maxey, South Fork and Otter Run Trails are easily accessible and provide lots of opportu- nities to spot these amazing migrants. Grab your binoculars and come visit the Patoka Riv- er NWR. You might be sur- prised how many feathered friends you might see. Warm weather brings many interesting and beau- tiful birds to the Patoka River National Wildlife Ref- uge. Many species, including the pictured Hooded Warbler migrate through the refuge on their way to Canada. Photo courtesy Richard Vernier. LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL NOW 1-1 A seventh-inning run was enough to break an 8 -8 tie, as the visiting Jasper Lady Wildcats secured a 9 -8 win this past Saturday. The loss put the Lady Chargers at 1-1 after Tuesday's 5 -4 decision over Barr-Reeve. Against Jasper, eight Lady Chargers crossed the plate, eight mak- ing the circuit in the third in- ning for an 8 -1 advantage. But Jasper responded by managing four runs in the fourth and then another three in the fifth for an eight all tie that held until the top of the seventh when they crossed the plate with the game-win- ning run. Lady Charger Chloe Williams delivered 109 pitch- es, striking out nine Lady Wildcats, walking four and al- lowing one homerun and sev- en hits through seven innings. Williams faced 34 batters delivering 69 strikes while collecting six ground outs, four flyouts and nine strike- outs. Jasper's Mia Werner al- lowed six walks, seven hits but no earned runs. The home team committed three errors and the Lady Wildcats had four, but made up for it with a first-inning homerun that just cleared the right center fence off the bat of Kennedy Matheis. Eight runs crossed the plate for the Lady Chargers in the third, with Brailey Mills, Karley Kavanaugh, Chloe See SOFTBALL on 2 Lady Charger Chloe Williams winds up from the circle, as Avery Hunt and Karley Kavanaugh ready for action in the early going against the Jasper Lady Wildcats this past Saturday.
