The 1988 graduate of the Elmbrook School District will receive this year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play "Disgraced," according to a news release. In 2012, "Disgraced" was performed at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York and opened at the Bush Theatre in London last month. The play has also won the Jeff Equity Award for Best New Play, according to the release. In addition to being a playwright, Akhtar is a novelist and screenwriter. His novel, "American Dervish," has been published in 25 languages and won awards, according to the release. The former Brookfield student cowrote and acted in "The War Within," a movie that was released internationally . As an actor, Akhtar has also starred as Neel Kashkari in HBO's adaptation of Andrew Ross Sorkin's nonfiction book, "Too Big to Fail." According to Akhtar's website, http://ayadakhtar.com, he was born in New York City . While at Brookfield Central, Akhtar participated in a number of activities, including student government. After graduating from Brookfield Central High School, he attended Brown and Columbia universities, graduating with degrees in theater and film directing. "We are very proud of the accomplishment of this esteemed alumnus and we hope to continue to provide the foundation that allows our graduates to thrive and excel when they leave our school," said Don LaBonte, principal of Brookfield Central High School, in the release.
