The Brookfield East High School girls track and field coach instead applauded her squad after scoring 151.50 points and a second-place finish behind Brookfield Central's dominating score of 172 at last month's Greater Metro Conference outdoor championships at Central. "It was crazy," Foss said. "A hundred and fifty points and you take second place. It's kind of frustrating when you score so much and the girls try so hard and do so well. We end up still a little bit short." Despite East's high point total, the meet belonged to Central as the Lancers now have won the last six outdoor titles. "We had to really overcome some things that didn't go well for us today," Central coach Lorie Lewis said. Central had a minor setback in the pole vault as two of its jumpers failed to clear the bar. "We came out here and knew we have to do really well," Lewis said. "We don't take it for granted that we're going to beat Brookfield East. They're really good and have a lot of talent. We knew that they would give us a challenge." Lewis used the early mishaps as motivation. "We talked to a lot of the kids and said, 'If you can at all eek out one more spot and one more place, we are going to need it today.' The will to secure the conference triple crown and represent their school at their home track was too much for the rest of the conference to overcome. Central won six events as junior Elizabeth Flatley blew away the competition in the 800 and 1,600. "It was a pretty tactical race," Flatley said. "Especially the 800, just because the first 200 was a pretty fast tempo right off the bat." Flatley won the 800 in 2 minutes, 19.96 seconds. Her 1,600 time was 5:04.07, which was 13 seconds faster than the secondplace time. Central sophomore Chisom Obasih won the 100 in 12.56, while senior Alissa Elwing won the 200 with a time of 25.69. Elwing also took second in the 400. East freshman Rachel Werking trekked her way to a first-place finish in the 3,200 in 11:52.34. East sophomore Alisha Harper had an impressive day as she roared to titles in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.0 and 48.05, respectively. She was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. BROOKFIELD – There was no stopping them. Brookfield East High School won its fourth consecutive Greater Metro Conference outdoor track and field title at Brookfield Central with 187 points last month. East, the 2011 and 2012 Division 1 state champion, utilized its depth to great success, winning seven events and setting two meet records. "It's truly a team effort," East coach Mike Steiner said. "That's our strength. We have some high-end kids, but we've got some depth. That has been the plan all year – to develop that depth. And here we are." East senior Mitch Douglas won the 100- and 300meter hurdles. Rounding the turn during the 300 hurdles, Douglas and Hamilton junior Chais Blackburn swapped the lead several times before Douglas leaned his way to a victory. "(We) have a friendly competition," Douglas said. "We're good friends. We were planning on pushing each other this meet hard. "That's exactly what we did." Douglas won the 110 hurdles in a personal-best 14.82. "It was overall just a really good race," Douglas said. "He's getting to a point where that's becoming a consistent goal for him every meet," Steiner said of Harold clearing 15 feet. The Spartans also set a meet record in the 4x200 relay, winning the race in 1:29.23. East senior Josh Breider won the 200 in 22.33. "That's the first time he's run that race," Steiner said. "This is his first year out for track. He's been a good addition to our team." Central placed third as a team and won three meet events. Central senior Carl Hirsch won the 1,600 in 4:14.70 and 3,200 in 9:24.21.
