Strength of tennis switches in Brookfield By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – The missing link hasn't been missing for several years. But the Brookfield East High School boys tennis team now seems to have a lot of links, or as East coach Linda Lied put it: "For years we were always missing that one player, but now we have a number of those 'one' players." That was evident as East continued a recent string of dual-meet victories over Brookfield Central with a 5-2 decision last month. "This is the deepest team I've ever had the pleasure of coaching," Lied said. "We're really deep and when we can line up the way we hope, we'll be even stronger." Marquette dealt the Spartans their only two losses this season. "They're just a little better than we are right now but we've been very close with them," Lied said. "We have work to do and we're not where we need to be to beat teams like Marquette. We have three freshmen in our lineup and it looks like we'll continue to get stronger with only one senior in our top 10." The battle for conference championships used to be mainly between Marquette and Central, but the Lancers have eight new players in their lineup this season and haven't been able to beat East since the Corwins – senior Tim and junior Felix – entered the school. "The Corwins came in and turned the whole thing around," Central coach Dave Steinbach said. "They turned the balance of power and now they also have a very good crop of freshmen – with another very good crop coming up. "For the young team we have with eight new guys, I'm very pleased. We played hard and kept our composure. "It's tough enough to beat the guy on the other side of the net, let alone him and yourself and we didn't beat ourselves. We did better than what was on paper." Felix Corwin, last year's WIAA Division 1 state runner-up, won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Tim Corwin won 6-2 6-0 at No. 2 "It's been a good season even though the team has lost to Marquette twice," Felix Corwin said. "Each time we're getting closer than it usually is and we beat New Trier (Ill.) for the first time 6-1, so the team's doing well." Freshman Doug Franken at No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of freshman Patrick Krill and sophomore Henry Termuehlen at No. 2 and sophomores Tim Langlois and Tyler Kendler at No. 3 had East's other victories. Central's winners were freshman Carlos Flores-Komatsu at No. 4 singles, and senior Matt Michael and sophomore Tarun Jella at No. 1 doubles. BROOKFIELD – Jason Burdge finally has something positive to talk to his athletic director about. Brookfield Central seniors Sierra High, Morgan Kenny, Casey Doyle and Sarah Fotsch finally have something positive to talk about as well when it comes to the subject of crosstown rival Brookfield East. High collected two assists and Fotsch and junior Josie Nordling scored goals as Central beat the Spartans 2-0 in a Greater Metro Conference high school girls soccer game last month. All three players are threeyear starters, as was junior goalie Rachel Oleson. Burdge and the seniors have their first victory over East. "We did beat them once in a shootout but that officially goes down as a tie," said Burdge, who is in his sixth season as head coach. "I've been going into our end-of-season meeting with our athletic director having not accomplished our No. 1 goal of beating East. I'm like Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears whose No. 1 goal was beating the (Green Bay) Packers." Fotsch, a middle defender, gave the Lancers a running start at a victory 34 minutes and 36 seconds into the first half when she headed in a pass from High. The play started with a corner kick by High, but the ball was momentarily cleared before coming back to High. "I saw Fotsch's head, but I didn't think I'd be able to get the ball that high up because a defender was coming up on me," High said. "But I was just able to do it." "It was a perfect ball," said Fotsch, who will be attending Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman Brookfield Central senior Sarah Fotsch is hugged by teammates after a goal against Brookfield East. the Air Force Academy and playing soccer next season. "My height helps me a lot. (The coaches) send me up there because I get a lot out of the air. I've scored a lot this season with my head – my fourth I think – but not too many with my feet. It was great to get some momentum for the second half and to finally beat East. We've had some ties but I've been waiting four years to beat them." Central had the better play and possession in the first half, but East retaliated with a solid 20 minutes to start the second half. But East's offense couldn't dent Central, and Nordling essentially put the game away at the 68:53 mark with a header off a cornerkick delivery from High. "We have seven or eight goals off corner kicks this season," High said. East was outshot 7-3 and Central had more corner kicks, 4-1. East coach Matt Schroeder pointed to defense as the main reason for the loss. "Overall, I didn't think that we defended well," he said. "We weren't able to match their physicality, especially in the first half, and we obviously didn't do a very good job defending their restarts. And we've been strong defensively. But we started the game on our heels and you never want to start a game that way. "They capitalized on their opportunities and the number of times we looked dangerous in the first half weren't enough." East's best scoring chance came 26:50 into the first half when freshman Abby Gregg delivered a right-to-left cross that freshman Ari Banks couldn't quite reach and the ball went wide of the goal.
