JUNE 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove • Page 7A Farmers market planned for Brookfield Historic portion of city seeing revitalization By Katherine Michalets Charles Auer/Freeman Staff Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD – The historic area along Brookfield Road continues to get new energy infused into it, and it will get even livelier and more vibrant when a farmers market begins in June. Dawn Farina Condon is working to revitalize the Village of Brookfield, an area of old homes and storefronts between Bluemound Road and Capitol Drive. This past winter, there was a successful tree-lighting ceremony. Banners have been created and now a logo has been designed to promote the quaint area. The weekly farmers market is planned for Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the public parking lot at 18760 Pleasant St. It will kick off June 6, rain or shine. Between seven and 12 vendors have already committed to joining the farmers market, Condon said, but she is still processing their applications. Condon said she contacted area farmers and offered them a space in the market for free. She was happy with the response and the variety of vendors. Items to be sold include produce, sausages and other meats, flowers, eggs and cheeses. Baked goods from Wildflower Bakery will be available for purchase as well. "We are trying to appeal to our afternoon traffic, which from 3 to 7, is going to be after-school (traffic)," she said, adding Brookfield Academy and Brookfield Elementary are located just up the road. "There is a lot of traffic generated from that." The Brookfield Recycling Center is also located nearby and is open Thursdays, so Condon is anticipating traffic generated from there as well. To meet the demand for people wanting prepared food at the farmers market, there will be vendors selling gourmet hot dogs and sandwiches and another person making brick oven pizzas. For those who want to take food home to cook, options will include fish and other prepared meats. "We're trying to appeal to that afternoon crowd," Condon said. "I think we have a really good mixture of people." Ron Lester of Lester's Bison Farm in Salem will be selling bison and elk meat, high-end pork, free-range chicken, Norwegian salmon, red snapper, mahi-mahi, pheasants, free-range beef, hand-rolled Amish butter, eggs, macadamia nut oil, rice brand oil and will have a salsa cart. "I'm here in Wisconsin. Let's feed Wisconsin people," he said. The revitalization of the Village of Brookfield is going well, Condon said, and she and other volunteers have many plans for the future. She said historic walking tours are being completed and a group of organizers are hoping to utilize the old train depot as a trail head and perhaps to display historical photos. "We're trying to do as much as we can to create an environment for existing businesses to survive and draw new ones in," said Condon, who lives in the Village. "We're looking to just keep going." WAUKESHA – Moorland Road at Interstate 94 in Brookfield topped the Wisconsin Department of Transportation list of 16 intersections in Waukesha County that recorded the most crashes between 2007 and 2011 with 294. But a stretch of Bluemound Road in Brookfield recorded a total of 531 crashes at four intersections during that time: at Moorland Road with 162, at Barker Road with 161, at Calhoun Road with 110 and at Brookfield Road with 98 crashes. The DOT reviews the number of crashes, their severity and the volume of vehicles using an intersection when determining whether there is a safety concern, DOT spokesman Mike Pyritz said. The DOT proactively looks at accidents involving personal injury to see if there's something it can actually improve, he said. "The work that we've done (on Bluemound Road), we've seen significant improvements." said Pyritz. Results of a 2008 construction project show a 39 percent decrease in crashes on Bluemound Road from Barker Road to Moorland Road. The intersection at Calhoun Road saw a slight increase, which the DOT attributes to Calhoun's expansion from two to four lanes in 2009. Brookfield isn't the only community dealing with dangerous intersections. The others on the DOT list are: Redford and Interstate 94, City of Pewaukee, 182 crashes; Interstate 94 and Highway 83, Delafield, 159 crashes; East Main Street / Highway 164 and North Grandview Boulevard / Silvernail Road had 14 accidents each, according to the report. Rounding out the list was a three-way tie between East Moreland Boulevard / White Rock Avenue, West St. Paul Avenue / West Sunset Drive and Highway 59 / East Sunset Drive, which had 13 accidents each. Greenfield Avenue and Moorland Road, Brookfield, 129 crashes; East Moreland Boulevard and Kossow Road, Waukesha, 121 crashes; Pewaukee Road and Interstate 94, City of Pewaukee, 107 crashes; West St. Paul Avenue at West Sunset Drive, Waukesha, 97 crashes; Moorland Road and Interstate 43, New Berlin, 89 crashes; East Moreland Boulevard and Springdale Road, Waukesha, 88 crashes; Les Paul Parkway and East Avenue, Waukesha, 88 crashes; Pewaukee and Bluemound roads, Waukesha, 83 crashes; and Pewaukee Road and Capitol Drive, Pewaukee, 83 crashes. Pewaukee In 2012, Pewaukee police responded to 54 accidents on Capitol Drive, according to Pewaukee Police Sgt. John Maloney That was . unchanged from the amount recorded in 2011. The worst intersections are at Pewaukee Road and the westbound Highway 16 offramp, he said. Drivers are rear-ending the vehicle ahead as they're waiting to make right turns The county is requesting because the drivers are federal funds to see what it can do to lower the number of watching traffic flow by and think the vehicle ahead crashes. merged when it's still waiting, Maloney explained. Crashes in 2012 Oconomowoc Waukesha Oconomowoc Police Chief Dave Beguhn said that reports from January through September of 2012 had 14 reported accidents on the intersection between Valley Road and Highway 67. "The accidents at that intersection were for a variety of reasons including failure to maintain control on icy roads," Beguhn said. Two intersections had 11 crashes including Interstate 94 and Highway 67 and Oconomowoc Parkway and Highway 67. The city's most dangerous intersection is a tie between East Moreland Boulevard / Kossow Road and Bluemound Road/Pewaukee Road, with 25 accidents each in 2012, according to a report released by Waukesha Police Capt. Ron Oremus. Highway 59 / East Avenue and Grandview Boulevard / Northview Road tied for second place, with 19 accidents each. The East Moreland Boulevard / Springdale Road intersection had 16 accidents, followed by the Highway 164 / Racine Avenue intersection, which had 15.
