The FREEMAN JUNE 2013 INSIDE Don't fight with fire: Be prepared By Shannon Venegas Special to The Freeman PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID WAUKESHA, WI PERMIT NO. 3 Meet the new humane society director 5A BROOKFIELD – An earpiercing beeping sound awakes you in the middle of the night. You groan at being disturbed from a sound sleep. But then the stench of smoke irritates your nostrils. What do you do next? Susan Weiss, public education specialist for the Brookfield Fire Department, offered tips on smoke detector maintenance and fire safety. Hello, Brookfield & Elm Grove! Smoke detector safety Brookfield East's Dynamic Duo 1B "A lot of people put up smoke detectors and think that's all they need to do. What people don't realize is maintaining smoke detectors is very important," she said. Batteries should be tested once a month and changed at least once a year. Smoke detectors typically only last 10 years. It is recommended all smoke detectors be interconnected and powered by both batteries and the house current. Fire safety plan Barbara Eash antiques column 5A Calendar of events 4A "People think they have more time than what they have when the smoke detector goes off or when there is smoke in the house. You only have a matter of minutes to get out of the house, so it's very important to have in place a family escape plan and a meeting place, and a plan you can actually," Weiss said. Beyond fire drills Students taught about fire response at home By Shannon Venegas Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD – All third- and fifth-grade Elmbrook school district students participate in the Survive Alive fire safety program with the Brookfield Fire Department. Susan Weiss, public education specialist for the department, visits schools two weeks in advance to conduct a safety talk, discuss how fire moves and watch a movie. "We go through a lot of the worries they have about fire," she said. Each class visits the station and meets with Weiss again. They then go to the Survive Alive House and participate in an actu- al escape drill so they know what to do when a smoke detector goes off or if there is a fire. Third-graders also practice making a 911 call. The program for fifth-graders is tailored a bit differently as many of them spend time alone at home after school or are responsible for looking after younger siblings. "I think the information is critical at this age of growing independence," said Laura Gaskell, fifth-grade teacher at Brookfield Elementary "The students don't have the . foresight to think ahead and not enough life experiences to have learned from mistakes, so See SAFETY, PAGE 4A Brookfield & Elm Grove This Month is free and will arrive in your mail the first week of each month.
