As Soroptimist International of Watsonville begins its 92 nd year as a local service organization, club members have found many reasons to celebrate while navigating through the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last 10 years, our club has provided over $350,000 to several hundred women and girls, helping them further their education, support their families, and gain improved self-confidence and economic stability. This past year alone, Watsonville Soroptimists gave over $55,000 in scholarships and awards, and provided support to local organizations including Pajaro Valley Shelter Services, Girls, Inc., and the YWCA. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced all of us to adjust our "business as usual." Meetings are now being held online via Zoom. Our annual Fall Fantasy Fundraiser, which has provided our major source of funding, was canceled. Our club is now testing its fundraising creativity as we host online Facebook fundraisers featuring bountiful auction baskets. We have even opened an online Soroptimist store, with beautiful handcrafted items for sale. However, we know this will not equal the income derived from our annual Fall Fantasy fundraiser. So, we turn to you. We are asking you, our community, for your support. Bid on items featured in our Facebook auctions @Watsonville Soroptimists or shop for items on our online store, www.siwatsonville. org. Tax-deductible donations can also be made on our website or by mail: Soroptimist International of Watsonville, P.O. Box 442, Watsonville, CA 95076. How else can you help? Become a member. Currently, our Watsonville Soroptimist club holds monthly meetings and committee meetings via Zoom. In addition to regular meetings, club members enjoy guest speakers and informational programs throughout the year. Social events are also planned, and members have developed life-long friendships within the club. At this time more than ever, Watsonville Soroptimists are committed to our mission of providing women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. The need is even greater now as we continue to ensure that those most vulnerable in our community receive the support they need. We will miss not seeing our friends at this year's gala and look forward to the time when we can get together again to enjoy each other's company and celebrate the positive impact we have on our community. We send our sincere wishes for your good health and thank you for your support. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, a health home for Santa Cruz County residents Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) has been a trusted provider in Santa Cruz County for almost 50 years, supporting patients with quality, affordable health care. PPMM health centers in Watsonville and Westside are often the primary and sometimes the only place a resident can access the health care they need. They provide critical family planning services, including all FDA- approved forms of contraception; STI screening and treatment; gender-affirming care; and abortions. Last year, they served almost 10,000 patients, with more than 14,000 visits in Santa Cruz County – 84% of these patients were women, and 94% were between the ages of 15 and 49. PPMM's health centers not only provide critical health care services to community patients, they are their health home. PPMM is on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, and acted swiftly to protect staff, patients, and the community. They saw firsthand how this health care crisis had a disproportionate impact on people who already face constant and systemic barriers to equitable health care. They have now resumed all services while maximizing the use of telephone and video telehealth visits in an effort to increase access to services and mitigate the risk of potential exposure. Since March, they have provided drive- through COVID testing at their Watsonville health center. PPMM ensures health centers are safe, welcoming, non- judgmental spaces for gender-affirming care. Services include: hormone therapy; medical referrals for gender-affirming surgeries; medical confirmation letters for legal name/gender changes; PEP and PrEP prescriptions to help prevent HIV; and behavioral therapy and counseling. Thanks to the generosity of several local supporters, the Trans Fund is available at the Westside health center for patients to access gender-affirming care who are unable to pay for it. Your support makes PPMM a health home for all who need it in Santa Cruz County. For more information, visit https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-mar-monte.
