Poplar Street, Petersburg SPORTS BRIEFS Winslow youth league on hold Winslow youth baseball has been put on hold until May 1. Christine Ful- tz, president of the league, said they have decided to wait until May 1 to see what the situation is and then make a decision about the rest of the season. As of right now, Indiana schools have been ordered closed through May 1. However, the school closure might be extended, depending on what the sit- uation is with COVID-19. New Indiana Birding Trail features 35 DNR sites More than half of the sites on the new Indiana Birding Trail, which the Indiana Audubon Society (IAS) an- nounced earlier this year, are operat- ed by the DNR.Eagle. DNR worked with IAS and several regional partners to develop the trail, which provides a great resource for Hoosier birders and others who might visit the state for business, vacation or pleasure. DNR sites range from the Lake Michigan shoreline of Indiana Dunes State Park, to the prairie at Proph- etstown State Park, to the wetlands of Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Ar- ea, and to the wooded hills of Brown County State Park and Yellowwood State Forest. The trail focuses on species to watch for in each location, site amen- ities that make travel easier, and bird- ing ethics such as remaining on roads, paths and trails in order to limit bird and habitat disturbance. The web- site also features an interactive map for quick views of each location and a downloadable guidebook. Birding highlights along the trail al- so include the wide variety of bird spe- cies that are year-round residents, and those species that return to Indiana each spring to find mates and raise their young before returning to their wintering grounds farther south. Properties on the Indiana Birding Trail will be identified with a sign that includes the birding trail logo. Printed copies of the Indiana Bird- ing Trail guide are available at proper- ties located on the trail. The download- able guide and online resources are at Indianabirdingtrail.com. For other lo- cations for wildlife viewing, see dnr.IN- .gov/3233.htm. To view all DNR news releases, see dnr.IN.gov. WOOLERY PREPARES FOR SHORTENED SEASON Coach Kramer sending workouts By James Capozella Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central senior Nate Woolery hope- fully will get to come back from 2019, where he and senior Tyler Kirby comprised the nine points at the Evansville Central region- al that placed the Chargers 19th in a field of 32 teams. Woolery ran a 4:41.35 to eighth place in the 1600 and was 12th in the 3200 with a time of 10 :43. Woolery said, "Training has been going really well. With time off from school, I've been able to really focus on running. It's a great opportunity for me to really work on a lot of small details. Without competitions coming up anytime soon, the pressure to perform is gone and I've been able to fall in love with the process more and not have to worry about results defining me or the work that I'm putting in. I think I can do re- ally well this year if we come back in May, but I'm more focused on preparing for col- lege and making sure I'm ready for this fall." Woolery will be attending NAIA Divi- sion 1 Grace College in the fall, running track and cross country. He was the sec- tional champ in the 3200 his junior year and placed 92nd at semi-state in cross country in his senior year this past fall. In that sec- tional race, Gibson Southern's Travis Hart led the race, but then Woolery surged ahead in the last lap for a solid win. Asked about the end of the school year, Nate said, "It's definitely a sad time to think about it being my senior year and not get- ting to run with my friends for one last sea- son, but I'm hopeful that we might get to have at least a couple meets this year. "Our coach, Joe Chamberlain, has been sending out workouts and has been staying in contact with us which has helped a lot. I check in on the team every now and then in a group chat we have setup. I might meet one or two of them to go for a run, but with everything going on, it makes it hard to, so I just try to encourage them as much as I can. "A couple coaches around the state put together a virtual racing series. The kids go out and run an event, tell the coaches the time, the coach then puts it in a spread- sheet and we are placed against other kids across the state. This is just something fun to do and gives us a little motivation to keep going in these hard times." Nate is the son of Sara and Chadd Flint, of Petersburg. Siblings in the family include Aubrey Fogle, Anna Woolery, Kire Woolery and Amelia Woolery. He will be studying ex- ercise science at Grace College. Charger track coach Chris Kramer said, "I have been sending workouts to the kids online. It's hard for them to do everything we would normally do, but I try to give them things they can do at home, too. Coach Joe Chamberlain has done the virtual meet. It's a cool concept." Asked about the shortened season, coach Kramer said, "It's hard to say, but the way things have been progressing with more and more people getting sick, it's not look- ing good. It would be good to have our con- ference meet or at least sectional and be- yond, especially for the seniors, since so many of them have looked forward to this time in their high school careers." Tyler Kirby clears the bar and starts his descent to the mat during the pole vault at the Evansville Track Regional in 2019. Kirby cleared 14'4" and placed second in the regional, which qualified him for state finals. File photo.
