Stam The Buzz Word in Church Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin See MINUTES on 3 See R AMBLINGS on 3 Continued on page 2 Continued in next column Scripture Reading: "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil." — Ephesians 4:26,27 Around the turn of the century, the Church was graced with an array of great preachers, but none were more te- nacious and outspoken than Billy Sunday. He seemed to have a way of driving home a point. It is said that a woman once ap- proached him after one of his meetings who was well known for her bad temper. She sought to defend her actions by say- ing: "But Mr. Sunday, although I blow up over the least little thing, it's all over in a minute." The evangelist looked her straight in the eye and said, "So is a shotgun blast!! It's over in seconds, too, but look at the terrible damage it can do." God created us with a wide range of emotions, each of which serves a purpose. Yes, even anger can be good. Contrary to popular opinion, anger itself is not sinful. Notice how the apostle words his above statement, "Be ye angry, and sin not." In essence, Paul is saying that we are well within our rights to be angry over an injus- tice or unrighteous circumstances. The recent debate over "partial birth abortion" is a good example. We should be incensed by "abortion" in general and hor- rified by "partial birth abortions" in partic- ular. The following items are accurate as of Tuesday, March 17 at 10 a.m. Go to most churches today and you will hear the word culture more than the word sal- vation and righteousness. These words are as old as the New Testament and may not be user friendly. Almost everything is geared or spo- ken to fit what we call "21st Century Culture." Every generation has its form of culture, val- ues and vocabulary. In a changing world we must remember the unchanging Gospel. Only Christianity provides answers to the problems we face today. We have a culture in which Judeo-Christian values are masked and long held traditions are ignored. Today the media, social media, universities, and sec- ularism sets the agenda for our lifestyle and we have violence in the streets and now in our homes and schools. This culture is de- stroying civility and endangering spiritual- ity in our churches. Many Americans are searching for some- thing that will restore the broken bonds of family and communi- ty. Many young peo- ple are asking the age- old questions, "Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? Does life have any meaning and pur- pose? " The problems, con- fusion and frustration of our society can on- ly be solved when we return to the basics of God's Word. The Church is to change culture when it has gone astray and not embrace its evils or become like it. True Christianity is a reasonable faith with a worldview that pro- vides harmony and structure in our lives. In the words of the New Testament, "Love not the things of the world." "Set your affections on heavenly things." Welcome to Coronaville is the song I heard on facebook lately and it was a fun- ny song with a meaning about how the world is taking this stay- at- home order. It doesn't seem as though everyone is taking the warnings as seriously as others. This doesn't have to be as hard as we are making it because the people in the know are helping the President make decisions which are for our own good. The biggest way to help is to stay away from one an- other for awhile and let the virus run out of carriers, but it will take some time. How long is what we all are asking and this ques- tion doesn't seem to have a definite answer. So we must do as they say and let them do their work. Baptist RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. We can never grasp the horror of human sin un- til we realize it caused the Son of God to be cruci- fied. Not Pilate, not Judas, not the mob, but sin. The ravages of war and pover- ty, the wrenching pain of loneliness and rejection, the haunting cry of the or- phan and widow, the dying gasps of the world's starv- ing, these and a thousand other tragedies all bear wit- ness to the fact that we live in a world poisoned by sin. And that is why Jesus died. The terrible, bitter cup of humanity's sin sent Him to the Cross. Jesus prayed in those last hours, "O, My Father, if it is possi- ble, let this cup pass from Me, nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will" (Mat- thew 26:39). There was no other way. Why did He drink that awful cup? So you and I would not have to. Sin is the second most powerful force in the uni- verse, for it sent Jesus to the Cross. Only one force is greater, the love of God. If at any time you don't have a church to attend, feel free to join us for services. I am sure you will leave be blessed. May God bless each and everyone.
