I will make a $500 donation to a charity or school of your choice for every referral that results in a closing! * By Christine Weinzapfel Hayden Youth First, Inc. America has found itself in a med- ical crisis that most people didn't see coming. There have been a lot of sud- den changes in our lives that we wer- en't anticipating. One of the most sig- nificant changes is the sudden break from school. Some corporations have announced they will not resume school this year. It is crucial that we help provide our children with a sense of comfort dur- ing this time. What are some things we can do to help provide our children with comfort and routine during a time that seems to be anything but routine? The first suggestion I have is to take care of your own mental health. If you're feeling anxious about cur- rent events it is very important to do things to minimize your own anxiety. Your children will be able to tell that you're anxious, and this could create some anxiety in them as well. Strategies for managing your anxie- ty might include meditation, exercise, yoga, and reading. It is important that you have an outlet during this time. Be sure conversations you're having about your own fears are not happening in front of your children. Your kids are probably spending a lot more time at home than they're used to. It is important to provide them with some normalcy during this time. If you have assignments for them to complete, set aside time daily for them to complete this work. This time should be structured and quiet, much like their school day. If you do not have assignments your children are working on at this time, I strongly suggest creating structured time in their day where they read quiet- ly or work on age-appropriate math and language arts activities. There are a lot of websites providing free services at this time due to so many schools be- ing closed. Keeping some structured time is important; when they return to school it will help lessen the shock. Once you have your structured time planned, it is also important to build in fun. I know it seems more difficult to have fun when you're stuck in your house. This is a perfect time to dust off those old board games, have some killer dance parties, try a new recipe together and remember what it's like to enjoy each other's company without deadlines and schedules hanging over your head. Times are difficult and confusing right now, but we can absolutely make the best of it. Take this time to enjoy togetherness with those you love most. This column is written by Christine Weinzapfel-Hayden, LCSW, school so- cial worker for Youth First, Inc., a lo- cal nonprofit dedicated to strengthen- ing youth and families. Youth First pro- vides 59 Master's level social workers to 81 schools in 10 Indiana counties. Over 39,500 youth and families per year have access to Youth First's school social work and after-school programs that prevent substance abuse, promote healthy behav- iors, and maximize student success. Youth First Today IN UNCERTAIN TIMES aying Calm ERTAIN TIMES TASTY TUNA PASTA MEALS IN Monica's MINUTES By Monica Sinclair Are you surviving being quar- antined with your family? Hope- fully you are finding creative ways to keep your sanity while keeping everyone safe. If you are like many people, when you went to the grocery store, you stocked up on pantry items such as tuna. We bought a few cans of tuna and wanted to find a different way to prepare them than tuna salad. Luckily, we found this recipe to help us be a little more innovative. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 8 ounces dry fettuccine pasta • 1 (5 ounce) can tuna, drained • 1 (15 ounce) can peas, drained • 1/2 (16 ounce) jar Alfredo-style pasta sauce • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 teaspoon dried basil DIRECTIONS 1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain and set aside. 2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine tuna, peas, Alfredo sauce, garlic powder, orega- no, and basil; mix well. 3. Cook until heated through and add cooked pas- ta; mix well. Adjust seasoning as needed; serve. Source: allrecipes.com Purdue Fast Start program offers giant leaps in opportunity, savings By Hans Schmitz Purdue Extension Educator hschmitz@purdue.edu Every promising Indiana student deserves the opportunity to pursue an affordable, world-class education. With its new Fast Start program, which could easily save Indiana families thou- sands of dollars, Purdue University has taken yet another step toward making this possible. Fast Start, created by Purdue in partnership with the philanthropic on- line learning program Modern States, is designed to help Indiana high school students earn access to up to a year of college credit through free online courses and the corresponding Col- lege Level Examination Program(- CLEP) exams. Students receive as- sured admission into Purdue if they complete five courses, pass the corre- sponding CLEP exams and meet the University's standard admissions re- quirements. This partnership with Modern States creates opportunities for Indi- ana students to take giant leaps in their education with a direct track to Pur- due. The move also aligns with Pur- due's land-grant mission and its contin- ued commitment to affordability and accessibility —a longtime University priority that has led to nearly 60 per- cent of Purdue students now graduat- ing debt-free. "Too many young Hoosiers miss out on college either because of its cost or simply a dis- belief that they can suc- ceed there," says Purdue president Mitch Daniels. "Our Purdue-sponsored high schools are one at- tempt to open a new pathway to Purdue, and this new venture is an- other, with special rele- vance to rural and small-town youth." Steve Klinsky, CEO and founder of Modern States, says, "Modern States and my family are pleased to partner with Purdue to make college more at- tainable for students throughout Indi- ana. Purdue has long been a leader in innovations to help students, and we hope this effort will both help fami- lies throughout the state and create a model for many other universities na- tionwide." INNOVATING FOR INDIANA Fast Start will allow Hoosier stu- dents to take online courses and CLEP exams at no cost. Passing five CLEP exams — the equivalent of one semes- ter —can save students and their par- ents the cost of an entire semester, and almost $11,000. And passing 10 CLEPs — the equivalent of one full year — amounts to more than $21,000 in sav- ings when considering Purdue tuition and housing. Every individual CLEP passed is a big savings. Additional- ly, the Fast Start option can move students toward early graduation and early entry into the workforce. Purdue Fast Start offers support to high school stu- dents enrolled in the pro- gram, helping guide them through taking courses and tests, and navigating Purdue admittance. Students also can connect to Purdue alum- ni and friends for mentoring if desired. Once Fast Start students ac- cept admission into Purdue, they will be known as Klinsky Scholars. The program officially launches in Fall 2020, with inaugural students granted admission for the Fall 2021 se- mester. As Purdue Fast Start begins outreach to prospective students this spring, Purdue Extension, which has offices in every Indiana county, will be a vital resource in helping reach stu- dents and their families. Fast Start is available to all Indiana residents. But it's especially benefi- cial to students in rural Indiana, in in- ner-city schools that often lack access to the full offering of Advanced Place- ment courses, or those for whom col- lege education is less affordable. Pur- due assures admission to students who pass a minimum of five CLEP exams through the program.
