B-2 Church Wednesday, April 1, 2020 The Press-Dispatch Continued in next column Church of God Baptist Christian Continued on page 3 ty becomes inferior. Accord- ingly, the elders and myself met and decided (at the cur- rent time) to promote God's Word with quality sound and sacrifice the video. We, un- fortunately, believe that the affects of COVID-19 will not soon depart, so we are con- tinuing to explore other op- tions to convey God's Word, as well as discussing oth- er methods of video/audio. In the interim, we have also initiated a newsletter, which includes scripture, pictures, and more. If you would like to receive an emailed copy, send an email to crossroad- soc@gmail.com. We truly hope that you are regularly reading the Bi- ble and listening to record- ed messages. But, we also want to encourage you to pray. So, we invite you to join us in prayer every Wednes- day evening at 6 p.m. CDT. We cannot physically meet at the church, but we opted to use our scheduled Wednes- day Bible study time and commit to prayer. So, join us in prayer each Wednesday at 6 p.m. The prayer does not have to be long, but pray for COVID-19 to dissipate, for the families effected finan- cially by job loss, for our leaders to make wise god- ly decisions, for the health- care workers, and pray what- ever the Holy Spirit lays on your heart. It is truly sad that people are perishing at an alarming rate from COV- ID-19. Pray for the grieving families; there is so much to pray for at this time. While people must separate and maintain proper distanc- ing, we can unite together in prayer. Frank Renner, Pastor Rev. Mark Wade, Deacon FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 Regular services: Sunday school 9:30 a.m. and worship VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E. State Rd. 56 Our normal services are Sunday morning worship and the Lord's supper at 9:30 a.m.; Bible school at 10 :30 a.m.; eve- ning worship at 6:30 p.m. Due to the current suggested rules of assembly, we will remain in our homes on the Lord's Day. From the Scriptures At the start of the new year, I mailed out a "52-week Bible reading plan." Today's scrip- ture was from Exodus Chap- ters 1-4. Here one can read that Pharaoh's command to the midwives was to kill the boy babies. The scriptures says, "The midwives, howev- er, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live" (Exodus 1:17). Surely this scripture and related scripture speak to the abortion industry. Because He lives. John Manges, Minister WINSLOW CHRISTIAN CHURCH Corner of Lafayette and Walnut Pastor 812-753-3539 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; We extend a warm welcome to everyone. Dr. Robert Asa, Minister service at 10 :30 a.m. I would ask if you have ev- er been disappointed, but I al- ready know the answer to that question for all of you. All of us have been disappointed. Have you ever bought some- thing, and been really excit- ed about it, and it didn't mea- sure up? Maybe it was a car, a tool, a gadget, or a toy, and it was nice for a moment, but then the new wore off. And it leaves us apathetic toward it at best but often it leaves us, well disappointed. But it isn't just things that disap- point us, but people can dis- appoint us. Maybe it was a spouse or a child, or it was a long-time friendship that broke due to disappointment. The truth is we have all felt disappointment. But here is some encouragement, peo- ple and things were not in- tended to be our greatest sat- isfaction. In fact, Jesus was. We were created by God, and for God. Jesus told his follow- ers late in his ministry, that he was the true vine and they were the branches. You see Jesus is supposed to be the life source, connecting us the branches that bear fruit to the root which is the ultimate life source. We need to be remind- ed that we are not intended to produce on our own, and oth- ers are not supposed to pro- duce for us, but instead we were created to produce and be satisfied connected to the one who as Paul said "loved us and gave himself for us." Come and praise the King with us. We would be honored to have you come and join us and see what God is doing here at the Gos- pel Center Church. Rodney Fretwell, Sr. Pastor JESUS CHRIST OUR FIRM FOUNDATION 1415 N. Vincennes Ave. Petersburg 812-354-4424 or 812-582-0240 We will be closed for ser- vice March 29 and April 5, per the Governor of Indi- ana's rule, and the Word of God to "keep the command- ments of God and the laws of the land." We are doing this out of obedience to the Word. Keep praying and reading. Stay close to Christ Jesus, for we know not when He comes. God is faithful. Numbers 23:19 gives us a glimpse into God's eter- nal character, saying "God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will not He do it? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good and fulfill it? " This passage should give us comfort that God always keeps His Word, though not in a way we might imag- ine. Fulfilling and making it good seem to be two differ- ent things here. "Fulfilling" means making it happen, while "making it good" sug- gests that the outcome is for the best benefit. Just as Jesus going to the cross has the best ben- efit, because His becoming a king for a short time over one small country is noth- ing compared to His being Lord of all for eternity and al- lowing us to be a part of the kingdom as His bride. April 10, Good Friday ser- vice at 7 p.m. "For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things" (Acts 15:28). What is Essential? The word essential has be- come a household byword in the past few weeks. The ex- ecutive powers that be have ordered the closing of all es- tablishments that are not es- sential to maintain life. So, what is essential? We must have fuel; we must have food; we must have medi- cine; we must have health- care—those things go with- out saying. But can anyone really justify labeling a liquor store as "essential? " As we worshiped "remote- ly" this past Sunday, a new Christian in our congrega- tion shared some profound sentiments from what God has shown him in prayer. When the whole world is swirling with confusion and panic, it is essential to keep an upward focus. We see now more clearly than ever that "all other ground is sinking sand." It is essential to have our feet firmly planted on the Solid Rock, Christ Jesus. It is essential to have a clear con- science to enjoy inner peace while all around is chaos. It is essential to have our prior- ities in line. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul" (Mark 8:36 -37)? The powers that be have determined living "essen- tials," but it is most essential to have God! We needed Him two months ago when every- thing was humming along as usual. But hopefully, with the huge reality check we are liv- ing through, mankind is see- ing his need for God with a new clarity. "I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shak- en. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure" (Psalm 16:8 -9, NIV ). Thought for the day: God has given us the Bible to bring peace to our souls. I read that our soul is a well securely in a God who will never forsake us—even in our darkest hour. The peace of God can conquer anything. Simply reading the Bible can change a heart of fear to a heart of joy, full of the most profound spiritual peace. So many trials come into our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the King- dom of God, and His righ- teousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be add- ed?
