Mark Wade, Deacon Christian FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 Regular services: Sunday school 9:30 a.m. and worship service at 10 :30 a.m. I learned a lesson quite a few years ago, don't pray for patience. I don't pray for pa- tience, hardly ever, and I know for a fact that's not very spiri- tual. Open your Bibles, while you read this, and read Gene- sis 29. If you need an example of patience, listen to Jacob's story, fourteen years to mar- ry the woman he really want- ed to marry. Most of us when we don't get what we want we give up on it quickly. The first resume we sent, no response so we give up the search. Your first request and no answer, so you stop asking. I think the issue is not God's timing, it's our instinct to give up when it takes too long. We are here in Jacksonville, Florida, and the traffic is terri- ble. We get started to our des- tination and within a mile, I have been cut off three times, and almost hit more than that. So naturally my nerves start racing and I lose my patience, but I don't pull over and get out of the car, I get angry. That's the other issue, our lack of patience leads to an- ger. When Jacob was conned, he became angry with Laban. We must remember God calls us to be slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to become VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E. Dr. Robert Asa, Minister angry. Though I don't pray for patience, I know it is a virtue I am in desperate need of. Hebrews 11 tells us of those whose dwellings were tempo- rary because they looked for- ward to a city whose builder was God. Patience. It's a vir- tue of the faithful. This week, when you are quickly becom- ing angry, take a deep breath, remember God is in control. Remember patience, and the one who is ultimately patient with us. "And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by My glory" (Ex- odus 29:43). The tabernacle or church building for Israel the na- tion was sanctified not by what was done there, but by the presence of the Lord. The same holds true for His new meeting place. It's not a building, rather it's inside of each and every believer. He has sanctified us, declar- ing us as holy, legitimate and free from sin. We are only these things when the Holy Spirit lives in us, because of our unfailing belief in the re- demptive work of Jesus' sac- rifice on the cross. By natu- ral extension, doing His will out of love for Him, not ex- pecting to receive anything for the work we do. I love the thought of the Lord being with me wherev- er I am, to be my guide and my friend, to laugh and cry with me, and to offer mercy to me though I can never de- serve it, and comfort when it's needed most. The offer is open to all. God's word tells us so, and God always keeps His word. He already knows your cir- cumstances and still offers His love and His life for you.
